Parent with child in the same year group as my child, came round this afternoon.

On the side in the kitchen, I had dumped my child's reading book for the weekend, the parent picked it up, saying as they reached for it 'Let's see where your child is then.' Turned it over looked at the level and then turned the book over and said 'Thought I recognised this we had this last term'.

'Bully for you' - I thought - I said 'That's nice!'

How sad is she!

People who come out with that sort of comment are probably lying.

She was hardly going to say "oh, your DC is way ahead of mine"

LOL! I want to troop on to the thread shouting at stupid competitive parent but then a few weeks ago a friend was asking me a question about a reading book and I said, 'Oh, yes ds had that but it was ages ago, I can't remember' - I didn't meant anything by it, it was the truth, we'd had it a while ago.

So I'm going to say - don't be overly sensitive and forget about it, children can stay on the same level for a term at a time sometimes anyway.

Just because her DC read that book last term, doesn't mean that they are on a different level. They could still be ploughing their way through all the other books in the level. I think you have been a bit quick to make assumptions about her mottive there although we don't know her tone of voice and tone is everything in these situations!

I think you are all missing the fact that she deliberately checked another child's reading book to see the level ...

Very true Niecie - this is parent who is very competitive, and I just thought of mumsnet (how sad am I ) that there was no subtle look on her part, or sneaky peek, it was a brazen reach over to pick up book and the comment of 'Let's see where your child is then!'

She looked at the book to see if she recognised it. The OP is assuming she was looking at the level to compare. As I say, the tone in which the other mother commented is important.

Since I am not competitive it wouldn't occur to me to be bothered by this at all.

Niecie - if I was looking at any book to see if I recognised it (reading book, or novel or anything) my first look would be at the cover for the title, then followed by a quick flick inside to see if I recognised the story, not turn it over straight to the back, and check for the stage, and then turn it back to the cover.

Hahaha how lame.

Pathetic! If one of the kids did this at school I'd tell them to mind their own beeswax!!
