Can anyone suggest books for a newly fluent 6 year old?

She's done Horrid Henry and enjoyed Rohl Dahl...she;s 6 and a half so is jut getting fluent....she still asks me to help her with word now and then but loves to read alone.

ALl I cn think of when I remember what I enjoyed are books from when I was older...such as E Nesbitt and similar...she's too young for that right?

Any reccomendtions for wonderful classics please?

My class are really into the Famous 5 and Secret 7 after a topic on mysterys. They are Year 2. Also the Worst Witch stories and some of the easier Dick King Misth books. No exactly classics but good for developing readers because they are novel type books but the print isn't too small.

Milly Molly Mandy, Pippi Longstocking, Flat Stanley, Winnie the Witch, Naughty Amelia Jane, The Secret Seven, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Wishing Chair all that my dd read and enjoyed when she was newly fluent. Ooops Blush you wanted classics but I think there is lots to be gained from reading books that aren't tbh

ooh..Famous 5! I just thouht of the Naughtiest Girl in the School too!

I got her the wors witch but we didn't like the style somehow...

I find them horrid but lots of 6 year olds like the rainbow fairy range.

Did you ever read The Snow Queen by Berlie Doherty? It is the most beautifully written, quite short book about a little boy whose heart gets turned to ice and his friend Gerda. My Y2 DD just brought it home from school and has loved it. I read it as a child but had completely forgotten about it. Has made me determined to ensure that we have proper children's literature to read as well as the rainbow fairy stories etc.

I love asdx2's suggestions - had forgotten about Naughty Amelia Jane ? plus there is Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Oh Green I had that from a book club at school and I LOVED it...thanks for reminding me of it!
Funny how these things slip our minds!

asdX2 well they're modern classics! I think she'd love those...the magic faraway tree is rather special!

Also Anne of Green Gables (might be a little way off but they get through things so quickly.) Anything in a series has fire up our DD - those awful My Secret Unicorn books has her absolutely gripped. But she's also loved all of asdx2's suggestions. Also some of the CS Lewis stuff.

And let us never forget the magic of Mrs Pepperpot, The Borrowers, etc.

Nurse Matilda books (Nanny McPhee films were based on them.) I remember loving them because I became very interested in crime and punishment, and there were long, long passages where all the children and their misdemeanours were listed. I loved reading these out.. can't imagine why I didn't go into law.

Dick King Smith Sophie books are brilliant - I got a whole heap of recommendations from a friend with older daughters, and these are the biggest hit by far. And just the right age for your DD. Although My Naughty Little Sister is pretty popular too.

my dd loves fairy bears and rainbow magic books, they are not the best literature ever written but fun stories that are good for encouraging imdependant reading.

My DD liked the Sophie book - must get another one. And we've just read Gobbolino, the Witch's Cat, which was another of my childhood favourites. Highly recommended.

My DD reads alone evry night now - she enjoys series, Brownie's, The Daisy chapter books by Kes Gray, Judy Moody, Naughty Amelie Jane, Milly Molly Mandy. These are series that she has LOVED. She never got into the worst witch but enjoyed the Oliver Moon books.

My dd is a fluent reader, but isn't mad for reading non-fiction. However she does love the horrible science books and is forever quoting facts at us. Just a thought if your dd likes science/history.

My DD's 6 1/2 and loves Jeremy Strong books. They make her laugh out loud, and the few bits I've read are very funny.

DD didn't like the Judy Moody books but loves Secret 7, Princess Ellie, Pony Club Secrets etc. Sadly she is also re-reading some of her Rainbow Fairy books...

She has the Animal Ark books but I've been reading them to her as they are quite dense.
