Ours get to choose by vote, they can have a disco, BBQ, day out. They are given a budget out of the PTA, and they decide what they want to organise themselves.

i was very appalled by the idea that a 'prom' was arranged by the parents. but with the peer pressure i had no alternative but to let my D1 attend. it turned out to be a ride in a limo to frankie and benny's with a photographer who did a small video asking the children about their best/worst time at the school. the girls dressed extremely OTT for 11 yr olds with high heels and makeup. however the children were extremely happy and it was fab to see their faces with such enjoyment. I commented to lots of mums that it should be called a 'leaving party' not a prom and there was no need for limos, however the video is such a treasured memory as the same guy filmed the leaving production that school put on. so although i can complain about the small trivialities of how it was labelled my D1 had a really fantastic parting memory of her time at the school.

Horrendous idea to have a "prom". Someone suggested it the other year and it was thankfully squashed as an idea.

Ours have a three-day outward-bound residential early in the summer term; a valedictory service at the cathedral along with lots of other church schools; an End-of-Year production in which some of the Year 6 might play major parts; a Leavers' Assembly (farewell play and presentation); a Leavers' Party/Disco (but in school hours); and a summer term school trip (like any child has in summer term, only the Year 6 trip is less "educational", ie. going swimming and then to the cinema).

When I was in school we had a big BBQ out on the field with bouncy castles etc.

although i didn't want a prom (leaving party) i was glad in the end because the school didn't arrange anything for the children. they had their resedential at the start of the year in sept, which all the mums were gutted about. they had the end of year production which was fab but a lot of hard work. so at least the children had something to mark the end of their time at the school. thank heavens a new deputy has arrived who seems to think the children enjoying themselves is a piority. hopefully DD2 will get the benefit.

Oh god not fecking Americanised commercial nonsense for Y6. Or any school children. It's revolting.

Ours do a camping sleepover at school with their teachers, have a blubfest leavers' assembly, and they all run around hysterically on the last day signing each others' shirts. I think there was a leavers' disco but it was held with other local feeder schools. And they all went bowling.

i know it's horrendous, i wasn't in a position last year to do something about it, maybe this year i could. i really like the idea of the feeder schools joining together. give me some ideas and i think i will try and do something about it this year. if i get my idea in early enough who knows i maybe able to start a new tradition.

Proms are a ghastly idea.

We have: a play (just year 6), a really special residential trip (June) and then a Leavers' Dinner. It's held in the school dining hall and all staff, parents and children attend. Everyone is on (carefully planned!) mixed tables. After the meal each child comes up to the front and their teacher reads out their leaving certificate comments. Afterwards it's drinks for the patents and disco for the kids for an hour. it's a really lovely community occasion.
