Thought DD was an anti-social genius...

She's not. Just had her report...she's 6 in year 2.

She is a hard worker..doing her best but struggling to join up her writing and when she does the formation of it lacks maturity.

Her knowledge of her number bonds were weak but she has worked hard to improve and still needs supposrt to apply them.

She found completing tasks hard at first in this the 1st term of year 2...as she would get distracted but this is improving and she is growing in confidence...reading is very much improved and she is now fluent.

I thought she was really smart! Her report goes on to say how delightful and artistic and hard working she is..as well as kind and popular.

WHAT!?? Where is my genius?

Will she get any better academically or always struggle?

She's at a private prep...(not selective)

Could you ask someone to introduce you to your child? Might you be taking the wrong one home every day?

Or, assuming that you've got the right child, and considering that a school report should never be a surprise to the parents, might it be time to take a good hard look at the school?

Shanahan - you know some schools practically make it a matter of policy not to let on a child is bright?

at my dd's school they very much avoid comparing, so if they are differentiating properly and giving appropriate work for each child, every child is likely to have things they find more challenging.

how good your writing is has as much to do with fine motor skills and co-ordination as academic ability.
if she's a 'fluent' reader that's pretty good for that age.

there is nothing in what you have quoted that suggests she's NOT bright.

'Her report goes on to say how delightful and artistic and hard working she is..as well as kind and popular.'

so maybe the teachers think these kind of qualities are the sort that should be praised and encouraged at that age.

Seth..thank you for the insight.

She has excellent fine motor skills which her teacher commented on only last week..she told me that her cutting out and drawing skills are very mature...she said "And these scissors are rubbish! Most of her class can't even cut a straight line with them but your DD does intricate things"

DD apparently finds her joined up writing a real challenge and teacher says her writing is "immature".

Seeker...the report was a surprise to me..I thought her joined up writing was excellent for a late July born child in year 2...she is the youngest in her class.

The HT wrote in the report something like "Next term we will have to work on DDs writing so she can get some of her excellent ideas down on paper"
