OK you helpful lot who told me not to make my yr1 dd do reading

well today she actually asked to do it. Yessssss!

it helped that we emailed her favourite cousin earlier and he replied instantly, so she was feeling rather positive about the whole concept of literacy.

so I'm going to carry on not making her do it....

good. being told by his teacher he didnt have to read the school books helped here. Reverse psychology rocks sometimes

My DS1 whose 6 and in yr2 actally came home on Friday and read his 2 books voluntarily and wanted to do more as he now 'loves reading'.

So I'm all for stopping it when it gets stressful and letting them pick up again when they want to

you know what guys, it's getting better and better.
She now demands to read Pippi Longstocking nearly every day, or Lotta by Astrid Lindgren (recommended by another helpful MNer on another thread). I can't stop her. It is 'Come on dd, aren't you getting tired?' 'No, just one more sentence, actually just ten more sentences'.

It is most curious how she used to say Biff and Chip at ORT level 3 were too hard for her and yet she insists she can do the difficult words in Pippi (I give her a LOT of help, obviously - she's not reading at anything like that level but it doesn't matter in the least because even in a difficult book the vast majority of the words are easy IYSWIM).

It is all about motivation innit?

Yaaay!! Glad she's enjoying it. Perhaps Biff and Chip et al were (to her) reinforcing that she wasn't a good reader whereas tackling the hard words in Pippi make her feel good about her abilities. Plus of course it sounds like the interest level is much more suited!

I think she may have also been aware that other kids in the class were further on than her (because they were older or had gone to nurseries which did reading) and that made her feel bad. Whereas with Pippi she has no-one to compare herself to and if she reads a hard word like 'sausages' I am and rather than expecting her to be able to do it.
