Skirt rolling hell!

Poplinn · 21/10/2025 21:38

My year 7 (11 year old) is rolling her skirt up just under the bum (no joke) as soon as she gets to school and has it like that when we collect her. I am absolutely appalled and disgusted that the school allow the girls to wear skirts like this and it’s become part of the school culture.

I know girls have always been rolling their skirts up , but to this level is absolutely disgusting. The school have a duty of care and by allowing the older girls to get away with it, they then influence the very young girls in year 7, who are not even teenagers!

My daughter will roll it down around us but as soon she gets to school she hitches it up again. She does this to ‘fit in’ I am appalled and enraged. I’ve sent a complaint to school but I’m still disgusted it’s even going on.

No words.

My daughter also started rolling her skirt up in year 7 they all did. I too thought it was to short but tbh it was past her bum! Now in sixth form all is well as she is mostly in trousers. The school would remind the girls not to roll their skirts but they never listened. Skorts is the only answer really!

pollymere · 24/10/2025 00:11

No teacher wants to spend a lesson staring at a load of knickers. Yes they are visible under the desks. It's gruesome.

Explain that it's grim and really unattractive. It seriously doesn't attract boys and no one should be focused on trying to fit in.

I am surprised the school isn't issuing more sanctions over it.

beastieboysontour · 24/10/2025 12:01

It starts with trousers then it's leggings and I've actually seen girls walking to school in just thick tights with their shirts out in the summer and just jumpers over them in the winter ......it beggars belief that it's allowed and yes it is tolerated by the schools !

Tiswa · 24/10/2025 12:08

Quite a few do issue sanctions the issue is detentions and negatives don’t work so do you isolate or suspend but they you would have to a huge number and that impacts on education and learning and because of the nature of this being a gender issue it is complicated

personally though I think the ultra short skirts is actual because of sanctions I think there is an awareness that the shorter you go the harder it is for the male teachers in particular to do any checking or measuring without it being weird.

it is normalised in most programmes with high school (look at Waterloo Road)

some have banned skirts completely but actually what is the play here

beastieboysontour · 24/10/2025 12:10

I find it more worrying that you think it's acceptable for young school girls to be walking round in tiny triangle things under see through tights and to be wearing shorts with the buttons undone down to the very bottom and being so tight (to keep them up!)that their bum cheeks are hanging out ....yes be bold be different but have some bloody dignity and respect for yourself and others .....

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 24/10/2025 12:32

Never understood why girls do this. Rebellion? Lol, no. When it was rebellious, it wasn't so high up that their bum was hanging out.

It can't be nice for the child, either. I've been at the self-pay checkouts with my husband before where we've both noticed some school girls buying lunch and having to use one hand to scan things and the other hand to keep their skirts down as they bend to put something on the scales. It's not that either of us were staring, it's just so damn obvious that you can see it on your peripheral vision. It's gross. And of course my husband doesn't want to be accused of being a pervert, and I will have an acid tongue to use on people who accuse him of such things. It's not cool, it's not 'in', it's stupid and horrible. Stop bloody doing it.

Wobblyarsee · 24/10/2025 12:38

I was doing this 30 odd years ago. I used to roll it up so much, it was like I had a rubber ring around my waist. I was really overweight as well, I must had looked horrendous but we all did it.

My 12 year old dd hates skirts and wears trousers, thank the lord.

Short of going to school with her and following her around for the entire day, you aren’t going to be able to stop it. Telling her to stop it won’t make any difference.

lilkitten · 25/10/2025 14:49

If it's like our school, she'll be told to roll it down when approaching the door. I see the girls doing it outside school, they can't get away with it inside. But I don't get why! Maybe I'm just old, but I think the girls who wear their skirts as they're meant to be, with tights, look good

Roll your own skirt up to pick her up from school.

Oh I love this! Please do it

PuckingDespair · 22/10/2025 14:41

If you tell her to not roll it up at school and she ignores you then it’s your fault and it’s unreasonable to blame the school

I take it you've never met a teenager 😂😂😂

candyfloss89 · 27/10/2025 18:10

My dd (now in Y9) started doing this in Y7, but stopped after she was following a classmate up the stairs at school whose skirt was so short she could see not just her pants, but the wings of her sanitary towel under them! She was so worried about the same happening to her that she never rolled her skirt again...tell your daughter this story OP and it might have a similar effect!

Going up the escalators at 8.30 can be quite traumatic around London. I genuinely don't think the girls have thought that through.

THISbitchingwitch · 27/10/2025 18:29

Newlook sell nice skirts with built in shorts. My dd has these, they are not knee length but they are cut nicely and she doesn't feel like need to try and roll them up.

Calliopespa · 27/10/2025 18:30

PuckingDespair · 21/10/2025 21:41

Exactly. If you can’t tell her not to do it then why are you expecting the school to?

I'm not sure that's quite fair.

Calliopespa · 27/10/2025 18:31

They do all have them very high these days.

It looks like it got caught when they went to the loo.

It's a classic case of teens following fashion without realising how stupid it looks. Next they will be trailing a "stray" bit of toilet tissue from it.

Maybe we should stage a nation-wide teen skirt day where we all go out with our buttocks hanging out.

The teens will be the first to object - and it might put them off the trend for life.

That has to be a feature of the nationwide teen skirt day - lots of sanitary towel flaps on show - and perhaps a few tampon strings and unruly pubes. It's such a foul fashion.

dunroamingfornow · 27/10/2025 18:41

I think this is why some schools have changed their uniform policies to trousers only . The peer pressure is horrible. All the girls near me seem to wear their school skirts so short. I do think they are shorter than ours were but maybe that’s old age kicking in !

Untailored · 27/10/2025 18:47

Why don’t schools just change their uniform policy to trousers. It would solve this!

letshavetea · 27/10/2025 18:57

Haven’t read the whole thread, but I’m 70 and did this at school. Rolled the skirt back down as I entered our drive at home!! Don’t see a problem really. Buy some opaque tights if it bothers you.

It is not old age kicking in. Those skirts are knicker-skimming at best.

The tights are a no-no with this look.

And I guarantee if you are 70 you were NOT rolling them this high. They'd have locked you away.

LadyDarcy80s · 27/10/2025 19:33

As others have said this is for you to sort so buy her trousers (although she’ll probably just get changed in the toilet once at school)
Or as someone else suggested start going to her parents evenings in your knickers.
I’d personally not worry about it, she’ll realise soon enough that it doesn’t look good just like every generation of teenager girl before her.
