Skirt rolling hell!

Poplinn · 21/10/2025 21:38

My year 7 (11 year old) is rolling her skirt up just under the bum (no joke) as soon as she gets to school and has it like that when we collect her. I am absolutely appalled and disgusted that the school allow the girls to wear skirts like this and it’s become part of the school culture.

I know girls have always been rolling their skirts up , but to this level is absolutely disgusting. The school have a duty of care and by allowing the older girls to get away with it, they then influence the very young girls in year 7, who are not even teenagers!

My daughter will roll it down around us but as soon she gets to school she hitches it up again. She does this to ‘fit in’ I am appalled and enraged. I’ve sent a complaint to school but I’m still disgusted it’s even going on.

No words.

Buy her a pleated skirt. These are more difficult to roll up, as they get quite bulky round the waist 😆

Also buy some nice thick tights, so there is no underwear on show.

I wore my skirt very short at school. So did my friends. We all grew up to be happy, successful women!

They aren’t I can assure you. Or at least they don’t seem to care about the bulk !My child has been wearing a too snug on the waist skirt and I know it’s because it’s shorter than a new one. She’s nearly 16 though.

they get penalty points at her school for uniform infractions although they wear a blazer so teachers can’t really see. It’s not bum skimming either. She’s had one point for it but that was on a hot day where they were allowed to take blazers off.

ages an extremely rule oriented , high achieving student though so I like this small rebellion and let it go. if it was really short I’d tell her. It’s no where near as short as the (correct uniform) skort.

Timeforabitofpeace · 22/10/2025 11:44

I think you need to be very plain with her about why you don’t like it. @smashinghopeYOU sound unhinged, actually.

And that would be a hard one to explain. So the reason you do it child is because men assume that women are there for them to look at, the old women don’t owe you pretty thing isnt it. So I am asking you as a child to go against decades of this shit and not do it. Did you roll your skirt up
mum, well yes I did darling but I’m holding you to higher standards.

PuckingDespair · 22/10/2025 14:41

If you tell her to not roll it up at school and she ignores you then it’s your fault and it’s unreasonable to blame the school

YouMightLikeCats · 22/10/2025 14:44

VikingLady · 21/10/2025 22:25

I did it, and I was a nerd. My mum just bought me extra thick woolly opaque tights. They’re as opaque as leggings.

If they were essentially the same as tight trousers, why wear a skirt as well? Idgi.

Allseeingallknowing · 22/10/2025 14:44

PuckingDespair · 21/10/2025 21:41

Exactly. If you can’t tell her not to do it then why are you expecting the school to?

Schools have rules that everyone is expected to follow, and there should be consequences for those who don’t.The daughter is more likely to obey school rules than listen to her mother. I find it appalling that some mothers are ok with their daughters exposing their backsides( and more) saying airily “ It was ever thus!” It’s not ok, it’s disgusting and vulgar. Back in the sixties, if any girl at my school had rolled her skirt up, showing her wares they would have been sent home, and very likely expelled if they continued doing this. Fortunately, we had more respect for ourselves and I never saw anyone walking around with their buttocks on show.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/10/2025 14:47

This is all back to front. My kids roll up way there and way home, it’s pulled back down at school though. It’s been done for generations being appalled and disgusted is a rather extreme reaction. I’ve told mine if they want detention it’s up to them and no I won’t pick them up late.

they all wear Nike pros underneath, better than seeing tight gussets.

SwirlyShirly · 22/10/2025 14:52

I was walking past a couple girls about 14/15 on their way to school the other day, one of the girls had her skirt rolled up so far the hem had got hitched under her blazer and her knickers were showing through her tights so I had to discretely tell her. It has always been the way unfortunately, I did it myself 30 years ago when I had legs worth getting out.

PuckingDespair · 22/10/2025 15:02

My headmistress wouldn’t have allowed this. We had our skirt lengths and shoe heels measured every term. I still remember a school assembly about how someone had brought shame on the school by eating in the street in the town centre.

Tiebiter · 22/10/2025 15:04

150 denier tights so it's basically leggings

Write something on her tights in posca pen so when she rolls it up she reveals "poo poo" to everyone?

Timeforabitofpeace · 22/10/2025 15:30

@TorroFerneyat 11 plus, ita a reasonable time to broach it sensitively.

Well because you couldn't really just go into school with tights on and no other "bottoms" 😂

MoreIcedLattePlease · 22/10/2025 15:36

Oh yes, it's definitely the school's fault and not at all the BANE OF TEACHERS' LIVES. We fucking love constantly telling girls to sort their skirts out, and then being told we are 'weirdos for looking.'

Fuck sake, OP. Sort your kid out yourself.

MrsKateColumbo · 22/10/2025 15:41

It's a small act of rebellion, I did this in the 00s, better than smoking etc. Although I agree I do NOT like seeing children's arse cheeks around, it's a rite of rebellious passage.

Culottes would be much better!

PixieandMe · 22/10/2025 15:50

Do a Daniel Cleaver and ask her if skirt is off sick?

MyNameIsErinQuin · 22/10/2025 15:56

Agree it’s awful but there are more threads on here saying teachers shouldn’t be looking/policing what they are wearing/girls should be able to wear what they want etc. Schools really can’t win.

user2848502016 · 22/10/2025 16:02

My DD does the same, it’s ridiculous but also she does really well at school and we have no issues with her behaviour- so for a 14 year old the skirt is not a hill I’m willing to die on tbh.
I got her “boy short” type knickers to wear underneath so at least people can’t see her bottom.
I don’t think it’s school’s place to be measuring girls skirts - but I would support them banning skirts completely and have everyone in trousers.

lightningatmidnight · 22/10/2025 16:07

To the people commenting that they did this - you didn’t, not like girls are today. I’m 29 and rolled my skirt up as a young teen, but it was ‘short’. My knickers and bum crease was not visible. These days, teenage girls are quite literally exposing their bums and knickers their skirts are so short. It feels quite uncomfortable to see as it is essentially exposure and they are so young and so vulnerable and only doing it to fit in and be seen as ‘normal’.

BreakingBroken · 22/10/2025 16:20

@lightningatmidnight fit into what and normal to who?
fit into the group of girls trawling boys with sexual innuendos and normal for girls who want to be sexually active? Because hiking it up at 11 is too young.

Sorry, do you think I’m defending it? Of course it’s too young. It’s inappropriate. I agree. That’s exactly my point.

Starlight1984 · 22/10/2025 15:31

Exactly. So the argument that it's as opaque as trousers is utterly irrelevant.

It’s not that hard really. My rule for DD is “dress appropriately for the occasion and for your age”. I rarely have to comment on her fashion choices.

I agree. We rolled up skirts so they were 1-2in above the knee (and thought we were uber cool 🫣😂).

I see pupils now wearing tube skirts that may as well be a pair of hot pants and their blazers are longer.

I can’t even imagine being comfortable dressed like that.
