Almost 12yo DD has started getting headaches

DD is 12 in a month.

Not started her period, no body hair but has defo started growing boobs. Shes very active in a competitive sport, eats generally well and healthy.

For around a month or so shes been getting headaches or possibly migraines most days, 2 days ago she went to bed at 4.30pm and slept right through to the morning.

Im thinking about taking her to the GP but then wondered if its hormonal and if others have been through the same?

Could well be hormonal but no harm in going to The GP even so.
Unfortunately painkillers and knowing the triggers are the only ways to help but if her hormones settle down later it might improve.

It’s always worth getting persistent band headaches checked out. It could well be hormonal but it’s impossible to tell. Whatever the cause, she needs to see a doctor. Daily bad headaches / migraines that are causing her to sleep for hours are not normal.

I would take her to the opticians, my friend had headaches at that age and she needed glasses.

ARichtGoodDram · 25/03/2025 11:25

Definitely get her eyes tested

Sorry meant to add, she has an eye exam booked for Friday so that's my first port of call, then if all good will book a GP app i think.

I’ve had migraines since I was 7 years old l, went through puberty at 12 so no known cause for them. They started as cluster headaches and progressed to Migraines, I now have Chronic Migraines and take medication for them as well as medication for Vertigo which is a symptom.

*I’m 35 now.

Has she any tooth problems ? If she has an uneven bite this can cause pressure leading to migraine type headaches as well. If the opticians doesn’t solve it might also be worth a check up at the dentist ( this happened to me many years ago as a teenager - suddenly started with daily headaches headaches - a molar had been pushed out of line by a wisdom tooth starting to erupt )

We had our yearly dentist check up 2 months ago and all was well but to be honest we didn't specifically say anything about the headaches.

@Nottsandcrosses how is your DD now?

Ahwig · 22/10/2025 19:19

My son got these from about the same age. Unfortunately he would be sick before the pain lifted. Partly I think he would be getting on with life like playing football etc and wouldn’t recognise the early signs of a headache. By the time he did , it was too late for medication, that ship had already sailed. Luckily he out grew them at about the age of 15 or so.
