Smart Watch Advice

Hi- our 10 year old is getting more independent but we don’t want to succumb to a smart phone so young. We’ve just moved to a new area so she doesn’t really know here way around or have good friends in the way we did before we moved house and I’m a bit of a worrier anyway so wanted to find a solution where I could contact her / she can contact us and we can see where she is / she has access to maps. From what I’ve read an Apple Watch with Cellular could give us what we’re looking for: ie. Being able to call her / for her to be able to call us and Location tracking / maps. What I can’t get my head around is how to get her a contract for her watch without paying an arm and a leg (it needs to be a seperate contract so she has her own number and it works when it’s away from my phone). From what I’ve gathered, I’d need to change my phone contract to one with a select few networks (o2, Vodafone) and then pay the £5-7 per month extra for the watch to get its own phone number.
My questions are:

  1. What’s the cheapest way to do this please? I currently pay £10 per month but similar contracts with other networks are atleast double that. Looking for cheap and cheerful for both of us!
  2. Is there another way that I’m not aware of ?
  3. How are you managing this growing independence without a smart phone?

Many thanks for reading this and for any responses / advice.

We bought my 10 year old a watch for her birthday. You can use Apple Family Setup so he can use it without having a separate phone. The only networks to support family setup are EE and Truphone. We went with Truphone and paid £79 for the year. We bought my daughter a refurbished Apple Watch SE second generation.
