Book / help to talk to 9yr old DD about periods

It's hit me that my DD has just turned 9. In my family all women get periods between 9-10yrs and I've never talked to her about periods. Which is downright stupid of me but I haven't really thought about it before. I haven't had periods since she was 1yr because of medical issues I had after having her and the resulting surgery, so she's never even seen me buy or store period products either (I also feel like that would have made an easier gateway to the conversation too)

Now I'm panicking and honestly can't work out where to even start the conversation. Any advice or if anyone knows of a good book to help explain it would be greatly appreciated.

I got my DD this starter pack so that she could see what the products were like before she had to use them and this book from Usborne.

There's a really good Newsround Special on periods.

Also, get her period pants. They're brilliant and have massively reduced the hassle of periods for dd, who was 10y 10m when she started.

How about 'Hey Emily it's just occurred to me that I haven't talked to you about periods. Do you know what they are?' And talk to her about sex as well.

What's happening to me (Usborne) is good. Get boys AND girls versions.

Assuming you're a woman has she never seen you deal with your own period?

Has her post been edited, or were you just not bothered to read it?

There’s a nice one called The Care and Keeping of You - there’s one aimed at younger and one at older girls

Is she school year 4/5? I'm sure it's covered in RSE in schools around that time. My daughter was asking me at this age! I actually got a phone call from school at the start of year 4 to say she had been asking the teachers when they started their periods & they wanted me to ask her to keep those conversations at home as other children in the class weren't ready for them.
You could maybe use the Pixar Film Turning Red as a starting point as it is based on starting periods.

My daughter likes this book. She started with Hair in Funny Places, which was nice and easy for her to read and understand.
We also bought her the Lil-lets starter pack which has a little book in and she unwrapped all the products to have a look, and we got some period pants too (although I find them very uncomfortable, like wearing a nappy)
