Our daughter is not 12 until July but has asked me to show her how to 'shave' - girls at school have said that it's hygenic and normal. I started shaving when I met hubby but only cos he likes it so it's sexual for me. Am I out of touch and is it really hygenic/normal or even appropriate? She's also asking to wear string underwear but I've said no.

Yuck! No I’d say wildly inappropriate!

Perhaps you could shave your hairy hands too?

Say shaving that area is not appropriate at that age. Remind her shaving any part of her body is her choice, and she should only do it if SHE wants to. It's not any more hygienic than having hair and certainly not normal for a 12 year old. In fact I only know two adult women who get waxed at all.
