Anyone know anything about Nintendo Switch online

DS9 is asking if he can pay £20 to play online on his Nintendo Switch. I have no idea what to say! Anybody got any experience of this? Is it ok for a 9 year old if he's playing games suited to his age?

DD has used it for minecraft and Mario maker, you can upload your games and play other people. She has it on the TV and I've never seen anything concerning but she doesn't use the messaging.
