10 year old overeating

Hi. My DS is 10 and can't control his eating. He doesn't eat fruit (never has) and is getting more difficult with what he eats and how much as he gets older. He will eat still eat vegetables & salad etc. without too much resistance but if we left him alone he would only eat 2 things - bowl after bowl of plain pasta and chocolate / sweets / cake.

He is now quite overweight and I don't know what to do. We live somewhere safe, so he has been allowed to go out to the playground etc. since the age of 7 but he no longer wants to do this or take part in sport - if we push him he will still go climbing or for a bike ride, but its an effort & if we don't accompany him he won't do it.

He also takes food from the kitchen, to the extent that we have had to lock everything sweet away, but we are still finding chocolate wrappers in his room on an almost daily basis. I don't know where he is getting the money to buy this from as we pay his pocket money into his account to stop this behaviour . . . but somehow he is still getting chocolate.

One time I even found an empty bottle of tomato ketchup - he admitted to 'drinking' it because he couldn't find anything else & there have been other times when he has taken his sisters chocolate that she was saving as well.

When we have discussed this with him he says he knows its wrong and he has a problem and wants to stop, but doesn't know how . . . he also has ADHD and takes medication for this so he is well versed in the language of psychotherapy.

I can see this is hurting him psychologically and physically and he is not happy and I desperately want to help him but I don't know what to do anymore???

I was just going to ask if he was neurotypical when you mentioned the ADHD. Has he ever been assessed for ASD as well?

As for the exercise, do you do much together as a family like go walking, cycling or swimming at the weekend?

To be honest though, you'll probably get some proper replies and not just my ramblings if you post in the SN Section Smile
