First bra for ungirly DD

DD is 11 and in need of a first bra I think. Any suggestions of where to go for something maybe a bit sporty but still a bra? She's a real tomboy and will run for the hills at the sight of anything frilly or lacy.

Maybe have a look at a bunch with her and let her choose?

LadyFuschia · 31/08/2021 22:05

My DD likes those soft crop top / sports bra hybrids - we got loads from next and now she is bigger find them in TKMaxx. She hasn’t worn any of the traditional bras I bought!

Shouldbedoing · 31/08/2021 22:06

I've found Sainsbury's Tu have a range of lovely crop top things my DD got stuck wearing all lockdown because we couldn't get her measured again. I think she now prefers them. I'll look for a link

Anjelika · 31/08/2021 22:10

@gamerchick she won't entertain the idea of going shopping with me for a bra. She's just really embarrassed. I'll have to order online or buy and bring home for her to try.

Any links most appreciated.

I got a couple of small women’s sports bras from Asda and Tesco for mine - very ungirly and not into those crop top things. They could try them on in the privacy of their own room and can be taken back if not totally comfy. They both shuddered at the idea of coming to the shop with me ! Good luck

Shouldbedoing · 31/08/2021 22:15

I'd say the small is size 8 on those Tu

Shouldbedoing · 31/08/2021 22:17

Sorry. Link hasn't carried across

@Shouldbedoing thanks for the links. Out of stock of anything smaller than medium 😢

Adidas do nice sports bras with removable padding (they're my favourite ones). Karrimor ones from sports direct are good too and Primark sometimes have some good ones. I live in them!

rocketpower · 01/09/2021 10:46

I can't find a link for the Adidas ones and they do loads of different ones but I probably got them from Sports Direct. They have thinner straps than lots of sports bras which makes them a bit better for under lots of clothes.

M&S first (non-wired) sports bra

Anjelika · 01/09/2021 10:52

Thanks for all the suggestions. She will need some kind of sports bras as she plays footie and runs so will check out SD but have ordered some racer back crop tops in white from Asda and Next to try for under school shirts.

DD 16 only wears crop top type as refuses to be measured for a bra, usually from peacocks type places

steppemum · 01/09/2021 10:58

dd1 is like this.
Shewore crop tops, then sports bras, but not a full on sports bra, more the good supportive crop tops.

We then found some bras online which were much more suportive versions of crop tops. Like a soft bra.

At one point I knew we had to get more, and she refused to engage.
So I went and bought about 20 bras and got her to try them on. (I sat outside the do passing them in, and putting the rejects back on the hangars etc.
She hated all of them, but I did get her to keep on one that fitted even though she didn't like it, and she allowed me to look/measure etc so we then had a size to work from.
The exercise helped her to decide what she wanted, and then we went online, but now had a size to work with.

Anjelika · 01/09/2021 13:22

@steppemum who knew it would be this hard??

They also have a sale on and do sports bras

Wizzbangfizz · 01/09/2021 13:30

I'm so glad I have found this thread as I'm in the exact situation with my DD - she has been in the stretchy tops a while but is quite "developed" and I feel she needs something more substantial but she is refusing! She hates thin straps. Going to try and convince her to have a fitting this weekend...

PickAChew · 01/09/2021 13:32

M&S have 30% off some of their sports bras, at the moment. They also do some fairly plain t-shirty crop tops.

Mscarna · 01/09/2021 13:57

These ones are simple and non frilly

The M&S ones two above are really simple and supportive as a first bra. We just got these a few weeks ago in a small. Ideal for an 11 year old.
