How tall is your 10 year old?

Dd is 10y9m and 5'2" she absolutely hates being so tall. She's always been the tallest girl by a stretch but she's grown even more during lockdown and is feeling really self-conscious about returning to school. We've had so many chats about how beautiful she is, how lovely to be tall (I'm only 5'4"), everyone's different etc but she can't see past it. FYI she started puberty early age 8 and got her first period two months ago and is crazy skinny, a tall beanpole.

If she's started her periods, I'm not sure she will actually grow that much more. I'd keep on giving her lots of reassurance and tell her that the other girls will soon catch up.

CimCardashian · 23/02/2021 23:51

It’s true, she probably won’t grow that much more but she’s starting earlier than the others. Her peers will grow at massively different rates over the next couple of years.
I’m not sure what you can do other than reassure her as much as you can.
My DD is 12 and is 5ft 7..... both her Dad and I are tall but I grew quite late and didn’t start my periods til I was 14 so she’s having a different experience to me!

nopulp · 23/02/2021 23:58

But that's not particularly tall? I'm shorter than that and all my kids friends are taller than me! My 13 year old is 5"8.

Bunnybigears · 24/02/2021 00:03

She is taller than them now but they will mostly catch up as if she has started puberty there won't be much more growing left for her. My DS is 13 and 6ft 1 I know it is different for boys but I honestly don't think you need to worry.

SlipperyLizard · 24/02/2021 00:13

I was similar, but I’m only 5’ 6” now as girls’ hyperglycaemia slows dramatically after puberty. I also hated standing out so much.

DD is about 5’ 3” at 11, but no periods yet. She loves being taller than her grandma, but although probably the tallest girl she’s by no means the exception at school, there are plenty around the same height. Her cousin on the other hand is shorter than my 9 year old!

Aquamarine1029 · 24/02/2021 00:17

I was already 5'8 by her age, so I fail to see how she's really that tall. If she doesn't grow that much more, she certainly won't be a tall adult, but it's a shame she doesn't like it. I'm 6' and I love it.

Franticbutterfly · 24/02/2021 00:21

My DD2 is 9yrs 10 months and is 150cm. I was similarly tall for my age, I stopped growing at 167cm.

Enidblyton1 · 24/02/2021 00:35

She’s tall now, but you can reassure her that her friends will catch up soon. Apparently girls only tend to grow another couple of inches after puberty, so she may well end up around 5’4 like you - which is a great, fairly average height.

dippyegg32 · 24/02/2021 06:24

Thanks all. She's been on 98th centile since birth and the red book suggests adult height of 5'10 but it'll be interesting to see if indeed her growth slows now.

My DS is 10y 6m and 162cm, which I think is 5ft3 and size 8 feet.

He doesn't feel tall because he's in a strangely lofty year group where he has many friends the same height or taller.

OP, get your DD involved in a 'tall' sport so she can learn to appreciate it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 24/02/2021 07:12

The other will kids catch up. Some of the boys in dd1s last year in primary ( shes yr 9 now and is finally not the short arse she was so worried about being any more she's 5 ft 2/3 ) were massive. They stood out then but now so much now.

Dd2 is about 144 cm she's 10 as well. She's much taller than her sister was at the same age. It all eventually slows down though.

Peachylovesherpoochy · 24/02/2021 07:21

DD is 9 and 5’4 with size 7 feet and DD11 is 5’9 with size 9 feet. It’s hard being tall at primary school, I think all you can do is keep telling her that being tall is brilliant (it is!) and agree with looking at sports where height is an advantage (pre-covid line did football and netball and we’ve got quite into cycling). The puberty thing isn’t true BTW as I grew another 5 inches after I went through puberty!

dootdoot · 24/02/2021 07:36

Oh bless her, I could have written this when I was her age. I was around 5'2 at 9 (as far as I can remember) so also very tall. I HATED it, was head and shoulders above all my friends and most boys my age.

Before long, she'll stop growing, boys her age will shoot up and suddenly she won't feel so tall. I'm now 5'9 which isn't even that tall - I was predicted to be 6 foot

Mayvis · 24/02/2021 07:46

My DD 10 is 5ft4, one of the tallest in her class but there’s a group of lofty kids. No periods yet. She likes being tall but it probably helps being in a tall family and having tall friends. Her dad is well over 6ft and I’m tall so I think she’s got some growing to do yet.

My DS 7 is 4ft 8 and is the tallest in his class.

heart80s · 24/02/2021 07:51

I was always the tall one at school and I hated it. Once girls started wearing heels and I didn't I felt better because there wasn't much difference. Just keep reassuring and hopefully it will pass. Now I'm an adult I don't mind being taller than most women.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/02/2021 07:52

My DD is about 150cm, and one of the youngest on Yr5. All her school life, she's been the tall one.. but when they returned in September lots of girls seem to have started puberty and shot past her. She hasn't yet. The boys look tiny in comparison.

HazeyJaneII · 24/02/2021 07:58

My dcs are the opposite - all short...dd1 and 2 have yet to hit my lofty height of 4'11" and they're 14 and 13! Ds is 10 and 4ft!!

IF 5'2" at nearly 11 is considered tall (which I struggle to believe it is) imagine my DD who is 5'9" at just over 11.
dippyegg32 · 24/02/2021 08:17

@loveisagirlnameddaisy it is absolutely considered tall yes, she's 98th centile for her age.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 24/02/2021 08:31

Yes, my apologies, just looked at a height chart for the first time in years.

I have two very tall children so my perspective is sometimes skewed. What the charts don't allow for, however, are the kids who don't continue to grow up to age 14/15 and then tail off. I had a friend at school who was 5'4" by the end of primary but never grew anymore.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 24/02/2021 08:33

And starting periods is a massive tick in the box for her growth starting to slow down. As is your height.

Kottbullar · 24/02/2021 08:43

I had a friend at school who was 5'4" by the end of primary but never grew anymore.
I was exactly like this. I started my periods at 11 and didn't grow any taller. I was quite gutted actually seeing everyone outgrow me.

My older two DC have been taller than me by the time they left primary, I imagine DC3 and 4 will be the same. DH is 6'5.

thetall · 26/02/2021 17:52

She does not look extremely tall to me, many 11 yo I know are that height or taller.
I know this is not accurate, since it would require much more data (e.g. scanning hand bones)... however did you try getting a quick sense of what the predicted height would be e.g. here:
heights.altervista.org/
Funny, it claims it tries predicting foot length too Smile

dippyegg32 · 26/02/2021 17:55

@thetall bone xray 2.5years avo was 3 months ahead

My 'littleuns' are both 99.7 and 99.8 centile...I've told them there will always be people taller than them, so not to worry. I worry more for DD than DS but i do tell DD she has the most amazing longest legs and people will be so jealous of them when she is older.
