DD had first period, long delay for second

DD12 started her first period in September (a week after starting y7 in new school!) but hasn't had one since. As it is now four months since she had her period, I wondered at what point, if at all, I should be worried? I know that they are unpredictable to start with, but this seems a bit excessive. I'd be grateful for advice.

I don’t think that sound excessive at all. Sounds normal. Is she worried?

kirkandpetal · 08/01/2021 13:48

Quite normal I would think. Is she particularly sporty or skinny (or both). I was a lanky sporty youngster (sadly neither lanky, sporty or young anymore!) and my periods were like hens teeth. Which was fab in hindsight.

As long as she isn't bothered I think it's fine for now.

She's not worried at all! Just me being a worrying Mum. If it's normal, that's fine. Just checking it wasn't something I should be worried about.

She is really quite skinny, although not terribly sporty. Thanks for the input. I've always been as regular as clockwork, and suffered hugely with period pain, so hopefully she isn't taking after me.

DD had here first period at age 12.5. The second one was exactly 4 weeks later and then she didn’t have another one for about 3 months. She’s had them for just over 2 years but they still aren’t regular.

Irregular periods at this stage are totally normal. In fact, mine remained a bit all over the place until I had children! I was always really skinny/underweight until about 18 and I think that may have contributed. But that's just me. I wouldn't worry. They will regulate as she gets into her teens. In fact, lucky her!!
DD just started hers for the first time last night. DH is in hospital with covid. It's all bells and whistles on this end!

Mine was like this. It was great, I could say I'd "started" without the grief of actually having periods. It was quite a few months before I had a second, but then they settled down.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 08/01/2021 14:02

My DD is exactly the same. Coming up to 13 and had her first period 3/4 months ago. Nothing since. I remember mine doing something similar actually.

Ladyflip · 08/01/2021 14:07

Thanks everyone, I'll stop worrying.
@TheVanguardSix sending you some strength and Gin, it sounds like you need it. Hope DH recovers soon.

DD had about 8 months between first and second, she's on the slender side though. I think it can take a couple of years to settle down.
