Preteens
What is Snapchat?

11 yo DD wants this but I have no idea what it entails.
All her friends have it
At the moment she has Whatsapp.

All the young people I know use it, inc my young adult dc, I have honestly no idea what to do with it. I've downloaded it twice and uninstalled it twice 🙄
I'm not a dinosaur either, I've got other social media. Just don't get Snapchat.

Watching this with interest and in the hope that someone explains it. I either dont get it, or I do and it's not all that. People put messages on it and once the recipient reads it, it goes?

You get a pic and a caption to view for about 5 seconds and then it can't be seen again. The chat also disappears when you come off of it. It's used a lot for sending nudes etc. Also has a ton of filters and you can have a story like Instagram and fb.
RougeVinEtFromage · 18/12/2019 18:19
Obviously preteens won't be using it to send nudes. Well I hope not!
RougeVinEtFromage · 18/12/2019 18:21
Lol I'm actually going to explain why I put that. My friend is newly divorced 38yo and refers to herself as a princess. Filtered cat pics as profile pics etc. She's always on it sending very compromising pictures/vids. Leaves no evidence.

It’s just sending pics and msgs to ur friends once viewed they disappear. My 10 year old nephew has it and loves using the filters sends me crazy pictures all the time. There is a map tho so ur friend can see ur location right down to the street ur in so I would change the settings on that so only you can view location if u have snapchat

It's a messaging and story app.
You can either message individuals privately like text but it disappears after you've come out the chat.
Or put a story up like Facebook and it disappears after 24 hours.
You can also follow famous people.
You also have an option that people can check in and see where you are this can be switched off.
Like all social media people can send nudes or bullying stuff. It disappears with no trace. You can screen shot stuff and it tells the sender when you've done it.

Can put pictures and videos on it, a lot of teens use it for messaging, the chat can disappear but it can also be saved by either party.
CoCoPops55 · 18/12/2019 18:30
Pictures can also be sent in private chat and only viewed once or twice! Then it disappears.

The NSPCC have developed an app called NetAware. It has details about all social media and others our DC's are likely to want. It shows ages restrictions, has user reviews and most importantly, how likely it is our DC's will experience online bullying, sexual content etc. Snapchat is a big no in our house. To be reviewed when DD has actually reached the age its restricted to.
