Accent changes

DS started high school in Sept and has suddenly (overnight) developed a ridiculously strong Manchester accent (we do live in Manchester!) with some words verging on unintelligible. It has brought back memories of my Mum threatening me with elocution lessons. Any advice on how to encourage correct speech with nagging about every other sentence that comes out of his mouth? We let the questioning Aus intonation pass relatively nag free but this is unbearable Grin

It's a phase, it'll pass! Does he sound like Perry?

It’s just to fit in.

My sister went to a posh af sixth form and came home one day with the most ridiculous Queens English I’ve ever heard.

She grew out of it and is back to her normal (albeit slightly posher) self.

I'd say just leave it be. It's just to fit in and a pretty harmless way of doing that.

I remember my mum threatening elocution lessons too when I reinvented myself with a rather stronger Yorkshire accent to blend in at secondary. And now I find myself thinking (but not saying!) similar things as my own kids adopt the accents and speech patterns of where we live (Cornwall).

I'm not sure this is the battle to pick, to be honest (though admittedly I don't have to live with a strong Manc accent Grin )

I'm Manchester born and bred but this voice sounds like one of the Gallagher brothers with a strange speech impediment! It's the fact it's developed overnight, hopefully it'll disappear just as quickly!
My parents laughed knowingly when I complained to them 😁

This isn’t helpful but this has really tickled me! Also made me think of when Perry, from Kevin and Perry started talking / dressing / acting like Liam Gallagher 😂

Haha yeah with a drawn on goatee and a bottle of oasis
