Helping child to accept loosing

I'm really looking for wise words up help my Dd accept when she doesn't win or come top of her activity.
We've got to this age (12) with her doing really well at her favourite activity but others have been doing better than her recently and she's just dissolved into tears and not known what to do with herself. It's an individual activity - when she performs in a team she's fine when they don't win but on her own it's really hard for her and I don't know what to say to help her accept it.
I know that's life but that doesn't feel very helpful in the moment!
