Does starting puberty early affect height

Char273 · 11/08/2019 21:54

Does starting puberty early at age 8 (showing signs but no period), affect height potential?

Does anyone have daughters who started periods early, but still ended up tall?

I am really worried, please help with some replies!
Thanks

I don’t think it affects height-My dd grew another 8 inches to 5’8 after starting her periods. My lil sister was 9 when she started, not particularly tall at the time, she got to 5’11.
Try not to worry! Smile

If puberty starts precotiously yes it can (DC currently under endocrinology care with regards to this). I don't remember what it is off the top of my head (2-3 years perhaps?) but there's an average period during which a girl continues to grow in height following the onset of puberty (obvs there are exceptions.

Though it's worth knowing that some of the things we tend to associate with the onset of 'puberty' (breast buds, hair growth etc) can happen early without 'gonadal puberty' itself being precocious.

Thank you for your replies.

MaisyMary77 - may I ask how tall (approx) was your little sister when her periods started. You have certainly made me feel a little better. Thank you

Ihaveplaydasneakytrick - thank you for your reply. I am a little confused after reading articles on the net. It says that puberty is not considered precocious if after 8?
Do you recommend getting her ovaries and bone scanned for a true idea of puberty starting or not?

Thank you!

I think she would have been about 5’2 at the time. 🙂

DumbleDork · 20/08/2019 23:02

I can’t say for my DD as she’s a pre schooler but I needed a bra and started my period by 8 (almost 9). In only just under 5’3 and they told my mum I probably wouldn’t be much taller than that

DumbleDork · 20/08/2019 23:03

Sorry pressed post too soon.

Anyway, I’ve been 5’3 since 11 and haven’t grown since Hmm

User10fuckingmillion · 20/08/2019 23:12

I started puberty late and am 5’2. My friend got her first period age 7 Shock and is 5’9.
Of course, the plural of anecdote is not data Wink
And why are you bothered about her being specifically tall? Being short affects me in precisely no ways.

Ohyesiam · 20/08/2019 23:14

My dd started her periods at 9 and is 5 ‘8”

weeps thats how tall I am now (average height for women of my nation). If it's any help my periods started at 14 so starting relatively late doesn't mean you end up tall. I did have a child in my 40s though if that makes a difference, seems more linked than height.

JenHJM · 25/02/2020 09:05

Do you remember physical changes prior to starting? Also, were you tall for your age. Reading about height restrictions worried cos dd is only 3ft10 at 8 and very petite. Didn't think periods would come so young as I had only at 13. As did sis and grannies on both sides. Did it affect womb size or having kids and were cycles painful

Hi,
Did you ever find out an answer to your question? In a similar situation with my 8 year old. Wondering if I should go to the doctors. Thanks

theBelgranoSisters · 08/06/2020 04:10

my DC started puberty at 8-periods at 11 by which time she was 165cm (my height!)..shes now 13 and 172cm and still growing..frequently mistaken for16/17 yrs.

PC155 · 04/09/2020 13:05

@Char273 has your daughter started periods? I am in worst condition, dd showing early puberty signs and her bone age came out to be almost ( 8 years 10 months) 2 years ahead of her chronological age (7 years 2 months). I worried sick about her starting periods soon and remaining short.

Char273 · 04/09/2020 15:24

Hi I totally understand how worrying all this is. I have spent the best part of the year being constantly concerned. Nobody really understands unless you are going through it with your own child. Doctors agree that most kids stop growing shortly after periods when plates fuse.

To give you an update: my daughter's bone scan was 1 year ahead. She hasn't started her period yet but has progressed puberty (so now even more worried it's going to happen soon). What to really look out for is breast buds - small lumps behind the nipple. Does your daughter have these?

What have the doctors said? My doctor was not very helpful.

My daughter has breast buds ever since she was 4 years old. I thought that was fat as she is overall chubby. That's why I did not give it much attention till last month when I saw armpit peach fuzz. I got scared and scheduled an appointment with her pediatrician who recommended bone x ray and some lab tests. Her lab test results are still awaiting but her bone age came out to be about 2 years older.

PC155 · 04/09/2020 16:01

@Char273 when did you start noticing breast buds in your daughter? How my h time has passed since you got her bone age done? How tall was your daughter then and how tall is she now?
