12 year old weight gain

My ds age 12 has put on a lot of weight around his middle this year and is very conscious of it. Thing is nothing has really changed in his lifestyle, eats fairly well and plays sports etc. I am wondering if it is pre puberty? I dont want to make a big deal and put him on a diet as I feel this could be quite damaging. Any experience/ advice?
Thanks

Is he in year 7? From what I’ve seen, quite a few kids go a bit mad and eat far more at secondary school because they can, and access to food isn’t restricted in the same way it is at primary.

It'll just be weight gain before he starts growing in height. If he is eating well and active like you say then don't worry about it. Happened to both my kids just before they got taller.

It could be pre puberty and he’s about to shoot up in height. The problem is that it may not be! Could it be that his diet isn’t as healthy as you think? Eg buying snacks from the cafeteria or after school?
