How do you help hormonal preteens?

Ds, 11, is going through a massive growth spurt at the moment and grows out of trousers weekly it seems. He's hormonal from what I can tell and is fine one minute and tearful or irritable the next much like his much older brother was at the same age. How on earth do you help them? There is no distracting him with activities.

Listen. Gently coax them into believing that problems have solutions.
