I will rather stink

DD (11.7) told me this morning that she will rather stink than use roll-on. Apparently "true friends won't mind". When oh when do they become aware of personal hygiene? I dread the thought of her starting periods.

If she won't use a toll-on, and I can understand you having concerns about using a spray, would she use a crystal or a cream?

Get her a different type of deodorant.

True friends will actually point out to her that they cannot stand the roll of under arm whiff if trying to work or eat with her.

I'm guessing she will learn but this could be a painful one. Quite like her spirit though! Hope that doesn't get hurt too much in the process....

I think we will have to try a spray as the objection to the roll-on is that it's wet.

I always use solid stick deodorant, I hate the feel of roll on as does DD1 (aerosols make her wheeze and me sneeze), DD2 uses spray.

roll on deodorant is rank...all icky sticky

I use the cream/solid stick ones much less offensive!

DS 12 uses a fairly dry roll on called Biosen, which doesn't have aluminium.

If your DD won't use deodorant would she accept it's vital she showers in the morning before school? Use nice smelling shower gel and talc? Hopefully she'll add in a deodorant when she's ready.

They do get very stinky at this age -like a can of Heinz vegetable soup.

As long as she showers each morning I think she will be fine. I've not used deodorant for years. DS didn't like me wearing it when he was born, don't think he liked the smell, and I've not used it since.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't know if showering in the morning will be enough, we live in South Africa and it's summer. Today is 29 degrees Celcius and she has tennis. Wednesday it's going to be 35 degrees and she will have PT.

Oh dear, OP.

Do you have a young relative to whom she looks up, to have a word -like a mentoring situation? If someone she admires expresses the importance of not smelling of BO then maybe she might learn from her?

If not then I guess you'll have to let her find her own way. After all, all her friends live in the same climate, and without water, soap and deodorant they'll all stink, which I presume is not the case.

Could you take her to buy a deodorant -there are some roll-ons which are stick/cream which are NOT wet -my Ds hates the wet yucky feel too, and so do I -we use a dry stick type.

Roll on is horrible. Get a spray.

OP, you can see there's a diversity of opinion on the best type of deodorant -so maybe take her and buy about 6 (sprays, roll ons, sticks) and let her try them all out -an experiment? If she really needs a push she could conduct experiments on how well each one works?

With my DS I just said, 'You stink', he agreed (with pride!), we went to a chemist to choose a deodorant without aluminium, and he uses it when he remembers. So much simpler! Good luck.

My ds objects to deodorant for the same reason. When I can get him to use it he walks around with his arms in the air for 10 minutes until it dries.

We now use the bionsen pump spray which he prefers (but it's still a battle to get him to use it)

He's 10 and sometimes has really bad b.o. He too says his friends don't mind (but I'm sure they do!)
