Ds is having an iPod touch for xmas,I need to lock it down before he gets his grubby little mitts on it so can you talk me through how to make it do he can't view pornShock or buy loads of music by accident please?Grin

Please explain me as though you are speaking to a very small childHmm Blush

There are settings/restrictions on the iPod touch. You set an age so he can only view things that are classed as suitable. Also you don't have to assign a credit card to his account and without card details they can't purchase anything. You could of course make sure he doesn't know the password, so he has to ask you to enter the password each time he wants to download something, but that shouldn't be necessary.

I'll have a look at dd's iPod tomorrow if you like, then I can give you a step by step guide (can't remember how to set it up at the moment, but I googled it when setting up dd's for her birthday and found it quite easy).

To restrict what your ds can do, you need to go to settings, general, restrictions, then you set a pass code. Each time you make changes to the restrictions you will need the pass code, so make a note of it, but don't let ds know it!

At this point you can set what he will be allowed to use, e.g Safari (the browser on iPod touch), Apple store etc. Bear in mind if you don't allow access to the Apple store, he won't be able to download free apps such as games, so maybe allow access, but don't enter card details, so he can't make any purchases, then when he has the apps he wants you can set it so he has no further access to the store.

You can also set ratings (age ratings) for TV, movies, music etc. here, e.g my dds is set as rating 12, so she can't view any adult content.

DD2 doesn't know the iTunes pass word, other than that I don't bother.

You can try reading the riot act about setting up any accounts without asking, but IME not much notice is taken.

Mine are younger but I have disabled safari and downloaded AVG family which is meant to be a safer browser. I'm sure there are plenty of others that do a similar thing. You can also set Google onto the google safe option but I can't remember how I did that Blush

Line, Utube, Instagram (especially sodding Instagram as it displays it as well as your user name), Kik etc do not need to know your real name, date of birth etc, neither does twitter.

Real life friends can be told you alias, nosey school bullies don't need to be able to find you.

Make sure you turn off in-app purchases, so no money can be spent whilst playing games.
Go to restrictions as SolidGold said before to turn it off.

We bought one in the apple shop and they set it all up while we were there. If you have one near you that makes it v easy and they price matched too. HTH

Oh and make sure you set require pass word to instant, DCs can spend a lot of money in 15 minutes.

Never link a credit card to an iTunes account. Let them buy vouchers, so they can only spend what they've bought. They quickly learn not to waste money when the voucher runs out. Smiths & Morrisons often sell vouchers at a discount.

Another one here who agrees with not linking a credit or debit card it the iTunes account. I don't even have a credit or debit card linked to my iTunes and I'm an adult. We just buy iTunes vouchers in our house. When it's gone it's gone!

I have set up both my DS & DD's ipod, I have not linked a debit or credit card (know friends who kids have run up £££). I have set my Ds & DD with own itunes account (think I had to lie about DOB, so make a note), but means I don't have all their rubbish on my account. If you set them up with an email, you can email them an itunes voucher and can state the price i.e £5.
