Hi folks any advice to curb this bad habit my 12yr old dd has picked up a really bad slouch walks head down staring at her feet ..Keep telling her to stand up straight but she says her shoulders and back hurt when she does ... She's the tallest in the class a good head and shoulders above everyone else I don't know if its because of that ... Also checked her backpack made sure its not too heavy don't know what else too do ...not sure if she really is in pain or that's just an excuse ...any advice greatly welcomed ..

this was me...a few years older than your dd
I dont want to worry you, as it is likely just posture; but take her to a chiropractor and have her checked for kyphosis and scoliosis
I have kyposis, and I REALLY wish it had been picked up when I was a child
Once curvatures have been discounted chirpractor can help with posture/pain. I think all kids should see a chiropractor regularly; well all adults as well actually

Thanks for the reply eldoret ...I'm going to make an appointment to see the doc just to get it checked over ..

doctors have been worse than useless in my experience. I would really recommend seeing a chiropractor as well

Though I might consider a physio as well as a chiropractor as it's physios who've given me the best advice regarding corrective exercises and pain relief.

if she is slouching all the time then it will initially be a bit uncomfortable to stand properly as her body will be stiff. I used to do that too, tall and shy , used to slouch about staring at the pavement. I don't any more and it hasn't has any lasting issue. I think just a boost in confidence and others catching up a bit in height helped. Once you have eliminated any medical issue, I'd just try to get her to be proud of her height. I was told once to think about the back of my knees as I walked....strangely it seemed to help. You can also get some back brace type garments that my mum always threatened me with.

Hi soontobe..thanks for your reply...she's slouching all the time staring at her feet ...she's complaining its painful to standup straight so we are getting her checked out just to rule out any medical problems ..changed her school bag to a shoulder bag she was using a backpack before she is terribly self conscious about her height and figure won't even wear shorts in the summer incase someone sees her legs ..she's an only child with no older cousins who could guide her ...not got many close girl friends ..she's a Tom boy all her friends are boys ...just at a really awkward age I guess

Yoga? She's a bit young but it's great for posture and flexibility.

Thanks for the reply bubbles..we go to the gym together which she seems to enjoy so might see if they have a yoga class we can do together..

Body Balance is great too- a combo of Pilates, Tai Chi and Yoga .

That sounds really famliar startlite. if she uses a PC a lot I'd also maybe check that it is set up correctly so she sits upright when using it. I wouldn't wear a skirt or shorts (other than for gym at school as we had to) from about 11 till I started work at 17 - and still don't that much.

Thanks for the reply soontobe...just hope she becomes more confidant when she starts high school after the hols ..
