Is your Preteen's phone insured?

I have been looking at getting DD a phone for her 11th birthday but am concerned that she might lose it and i'll be stuck in a contract with no phone.

I had a quick look online but most of the insurance policies say 16+. Am i looking for something which isn't there?

DS has always had a payg phone. He had one at 11 (as had to catch public bus to school). His most recent payg was only about £50, it was his birthday gift almost two years ago.

So no, no insurance here. However neither me or DH have insurance for our contract phones either.

I wouldn't take a contract out in an 11yr old's name - even if you're able too. Both my teenager DDs' contracts are in my name. I pay the bill after all.
None of us have insurance on our phones. If they ever lose their phones I would replace with a cheapo handset to teach them not to lose things.

DH and i were planning on adding her on as a sharer on our account as that way she can use some of the minutes/texts that we never use up each month.

DH and I don't have insurance either but in 20+ years, we've never lost a phone (or had one stolen).

At 11, I'd suggest getting a cheap phone, so if she loses it, it won't cost too much to replace. That's what I'd do anyway.

I have a blackberry on virgin for DS who is 11. It costs £14 a month and insurance is included as long as you have the mobile rescue app downloaded onto it. I think this is standard for all their phones. I think its a £30 excess you have to pay if it gets lost/stolen/broken. His contract is in my name, I don't think they would let it be taken out in an under 16s name.

DS2 aged 11 has cheapo phone (£30 iirc) on pay as you go. He doesn't use it much - sees all his pals at school anyway and I pick him up so limited need. His older brother is at secondary school and uses his a lot more. He wanted a swish one and paid with his birthday money. But it's still PAYG.

Contract phoneshere, and in my name. We have free gadget insurance through our bank account, and so I have registered the phones, but, amazingly, they are one of the few things neither of my DS's have lost!

DD got hers at 12 and it was a cheapy too.

IMHO, there is no point to getting a pre-teen an expensive phone - they are likely to lose/break it, or (and far worse) get mugged for it on the way to/from school.

Having said that, none of those have happened to DD in the last 3 years. Or DS so far!

You really think it's appropriate for a preteen to have a phone that us expensive enough to need insuring?

My 3 all have p&g phones. They are older teens.

A kids who us out and about and breeds a phone for safety/communication doesn't need one that makes them a"mugger magnet" apart from the risk of loss etc. and it is simply not the case that"every one" has and expensive posing point.
