New year 7's and make up

Should they be allowed to wear it? I am against my DD is 11, why on earth would she need mascara and eyeliner on, but a mum i know is doing just that for her DD every morning opinions please am i behind the times?

Absolutely not.My DDs started year 7 this week and def no make up, but it wouldn't enter their heads anyway.

No Sandy it wouldn't enter my dd's head either , its just her mate., who i think is pushed by the mum. She had hi lighted hair in year 6!!

My DD2's new school states no make up until Y10 and then it has to be 'natural' (yeah right). My friends DD wants to wear make up as she is now an 'adult' (she's 11) so Mum has brought her some clear mascara and a lip balm....lol Luckily my DD2 is not interested in make up, though I did think that of DD1 and within a year she was wearing it

11 is a bit young. I let them use makeup at about 12/13 but not for every day in school because the school banned it. I got them some 'natural' looking (taupe shades) eye makeup and clear mascara plus lip balm for the occasions when they went out with friends but mostly they weren't interested.

DD1 got a book by Bobbi Brown as a gift when she was about 12 'Teenage Beauty' with great tips about makeup for both parents and daughters (I suppose sons too if they want to wear some).

From about age 14 on the DDs have all so far chosen to wear mascara and eyeshadow to taste -- two are redheads and one is blonde, all with fair eyelashes, so the mascara was a good choice for them imo.

Youngest DD is 11 and has shown no interest yet. Her friends are in the same boat which is a relief for me. It's nice when the school clamps down on makeup and hair colour experimentation. Makes a parent's job easier. However, no matter what a school does and what a friend is allowed to do, you are still allowed as the parent to say Not So Fast.

Sometimes the years 11 to 13 are the years when a big reshuffle of friendships happens because it becomes apparent that families do not share the same values or aspiratins for their children. It can be painful.

Our school rules allow natural makeup like clear or pale nail varnish. Glitter and unnatural hair colours are a big no no.

I don't think MN reflects wider society on this, you'll only get MN opinions, not the bigger "common" world. I would say most girls we know occasionally wear make up from about 9yo (yr4).

Local High School says officially no make up but most girls try to get away with something.

I was wearing make up from 11 , so were my friends its just 'fitting in' and tbh my mums laid back attitude made 'rebellion' redundant because it had no novelty.

She is allowed to wear a little to parties etc but for school the only thing I allow let her put some BB cream on as it has a sunscreen and moisturiser in it. No mascara, eyeliner or lip balm allowed! (Except clear vaseline in winter)

My DD3 is Year 8 now, and she wears mascara to school.

She was begging from about a month into Year 7, but I held firm until Year 8. For me, 11 and 12 is too young to wear it to school - once they're proper teens then I will compromise.

The school says no make up at all, but I allow mascara and concealer so long as I can't see it unless I look for it. I've caught my elder DDs with eyeliner, lipgloss, the works and they know that they get into trouble. Mascara and concealer is our compromise - they have blonde eyelashes which they hate, and I remember the pain of having spots and not being allowed concealer!

On weekends and non-school occasions, they can wear whatever (within reason - I'm not a fan of fake eyelashes or fake tan) and they're usually pretty sensible to be fair. DD4 is still at Primary and has shown no real interest other than a bit of lipgloss and eyeshadow if her sisters will let her play with their stuff.

How things change in three weeks! DD dashed past me out the door this morning and I though she looked different. Just made her bed and found my mascara on it!

DD started wearing mascara some time in Y7. I'm so used to it now, I notice when she hasn't got it on!

DD2 (11) wears make up sometimes at weekends not to school. "It's not allowed."

DD1(14) refuses to wear make up to school either and gets teased.

Sadly the "not allowed" is very poorly enforced

I'm guessing that DD2 will start sneaking the odd bit on sometime in the next year or so. She is much more bothered by her peers views.

DD2(11) has more makeup than me ! She wears foundation, mascara, lip gloss and eyeliner. I'm not very happy about it but if I stop her, she will just get more off friends :L

Dcs school says no make up as well. Infect dd kept getting in trouble for wearing mascara when she wasn't. She just has very long dark eyelashes.

They are not allowed to wear makeup or nail varnish at my daughter's school until year 10 (and then only discreetly), otherwise they get detention. My daughter witnessed someone getting detention for nail varnish last week, so even if she wanted to wear it, she's certainly put off by the risk of a detention!

In yr 7 not for school, I thought most schools said no make up? Mine did but like bruffins dd I always got told off when I didn't have any on, one teacher got cotton wool and make up remover and made me clean my eyes in front of her as she was sure I had mascara on! I didn't and have eczema and very sensitive skin and reacted to the make up remover and got huge, puffy sore eyes!
