This may sound a very odd idea, but at my DD's nursery they had a 'pretend' pet... it was a little stuffed (as in cuddly toy, not as in taxidermy) hamster, which had a little wooden hutch, and a brush for its fur and a pretend carrot & lettuce leaf.

Anyway, every weekend it would be sent home with a different child, together with its little travel journal (an exercise book), and you were supposed to write a little report of what it had been doing and the child could draw a picture. Think you were meant to write 'Fluffy liked having his fur brushed and having cuddles', but I used to write that he'd been to B&Q and for a pub lunch.

Just remembered about it. Happy days.

Our pre-school has a teddy bear, that each child has once a week and in the book that comes with it, you can write where you have been with it and what you did and there is a disposable camera in the bag and you leave a space in the book for the photo.
Most parents are quite happy to help do this. But we do have a few who don't see the point of it
