Sunburnt face ...

What should I do? My DS (3.5) is at a Montessori kindergarten, 2 days a week. I've given them suncream, which they requested, and he takes a sun hat with him. Normally he's OK but today he's come out with a sunburnt face. I'm quite cross as we've just been away for two weeks in the sun and not once did he get burnt. He's very fair skinned. How do I raise it? On one hand, maybe I should have put lotion on before sending him. And if I say anything, I then feel worried about leaving him after his mum's just made a complaint! I know I do have to say something as I don't want it to happen again, but do I write a note, say to the teacher or call or email the school office? Speaking to the teacher might not be that easy as pick up/drop off is always quite hectic.

I would def ask about it! but my local pre-school you have to have the suncream on before you go to the school

I would give her a call and ask her about it. In my opinion no excuse for sunburn (one of my things) and as a nursery manager i would be so upset if it happened. I personally would appreciate a call rather than a note or trying to chat at busy time, but if sunburn is bad then a letter of complaint is more appropriate.

If I need to speak with the nursery I tend to phone during the day and ask to speak with keyworker or person in charge of the room ds is in - they have more time to talk properly during the day than at drop off/pick up or even better call in during the day if you are local. At the nursery ds goes to at this time of year they line up to have suncream on then hats before they are allowed outdoors.

Just a thought - was it definitely sunburn? ds has fair skin but if he has been running about outside he gets a very red face (even with high SPF cream and hat on)which calms down once he has cooled off.

To be honest, I would get into a routine of putting it on before he goes - even if it's a bit cloudy. Get a decent, waterproof, very high protection factor and it will last for the whole session.

That's what we do for school, anyway. They won't put it on themselves. And I'm not sure I'd trust them to remember/do it properly for so many children, even if they offered.

By all means ask them about it - but in terms of whether they do have a routine of putting it on or whether they are expecting it to be done before the children arrive. Might they have assumed his suncream was for topping up only, and that he did have some on already?
