School dilemma

DC was supposed to start reception this September. Unfortunately we didn’t get any of the schools we put down and were given a very poorly rated school which we have declined.
My child is July born. They could really do with some extra time in nursery. So my question is, did anybody put their child into nursery for a longer period of time and delay starting school?
If so, did you have them in a school nursery or private nursery?
DC was in a school nursery Sept 24 - July 25.
Thanks!!

Yes I did. My eldest is born mid July and he had his first day in reception yesterday as I deferred him a year. He stayed in private nursery and finished his final week there last week.

Nursery hadn’t had a CSA starter before but were absolutely fine with it and he has had a fun time there.

If you are on fb check out the group Flexible Admissions for Summer Borns. They are an excellent resource.

Yesterday went brilliantly! It’s early days but so far he seems so much more confident and ready than he would have been last year.

We were confident of a place at our preferred school whatever year we applied though as it’s a small rural school that is undersubscribed.

Also, it’s hard to go against the grain but someone has to be the first. And you are the only person who knows their child best.

it’s becoming increasingly common in my area and I personally know quite a few people who have opted to do this and even more who are planning to do so once their child is old enough. I also know someone who was in your exact situation last year who deferred their summer born child due to him not getting any of their preferred schools. They’ve since moved house and this has altered the catchment they are in and meant they now have a preferred school place. They were in the process of moving anyway so it’s worked well for them!
