What does being CRB checked involve?

Have recently got myself a place on the board of our local surestart children's centre. I will have to be CRB checked and just wondering whats involved. Is there a charge for it and will dp have to be checked as well.

YOu hget a form, send off documents (DP thinks driving license, utility bill & birth certificate). It does cost (£22 I think) but the people that wanted DP checking paid.

Its a check on wether or not you have a criminal record . DP wont be checked if hes not involved, there is a charge but the surestart centre may fund it.

I've been done for a similar reason. There's a straightforward form to fill in, name, address, previous names, previous addresses, that style of thing. Then you fish out some ID (I had a passport, driving licence and birth cert. There's a long list of things you can use.) The manager at the pre-school (I'm committee) checked that and endorsed the form (the ID does not have to be sent off).

Then you post the form, they do their check, and your bit of paper comes back saying you've no convictions (I assume )

DP will not be checked.

There is a charge for it but, normally, the employer would pay for it. Your dp will not be checked unless he will be involved; working at or visiting the establishment. It involves filling out a form, giving your address details over the last five years. They make police checks against the addresses you give. That's it!

It involves filling in a form, including your names (inc any previous) address (for last 5 years) and signing a declaration about previous convictions. You have to provide certain ID to prove name and address - you will be told exactly what you need but Driving Licence, Passport, Utility Bill type thing.

There is a charge but the organisation that requires you to have the check usually pays this and sorts out the form and ID etc. I don't imagine your dp will have to be checked but I suppose that would depend on the position.

I used to do them at work (Voluntary organisation) and we would do all the legwork. You should just be given a form to fill in and told what ID you need.

The form then goes off to the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) and they check for DoH, Police (and something else I think) information on you, then report back to Sure Start with a copy being sent to you too.

Its a voluntary thing - I have a nearly full time self employed job already. At a playgroup recently the centre manager asked if anyone would be interested so I thought it sounded interesting. One meeting with a bit of prep, every 3 months. With my boring life at the moment it will be as good as a night out !! I hear its a good stepping stone to being a school governor so I have an ulterior motive .
Since having dc's I have used the two surestart centres in my town an awful lot, all those free activities and a cheap cafe to sit and gossip in while the kiddies investigate the library.... so now I'm back at work I can still be involved but from the other side of the fence.

Thanks for all the info ladies my crb should come back spotless, I am so boring I've never even had a point on the driving licence I acquired in 1980!
