Ratios

I'm just trying to get my head around ratios. If a preschool setting for 2-5 year olds has 32 children in during a setting what would the minimum ratio be for adults.

2 years are 3 kids to 1 adult, 3-5 are 8 kids to 1 adult (I think! It's been some time since I worked in a nursery) - so it really depends how many 2 years olds.

Thank you.

I'm just trying to work out a counter argument for his ehcp assessment that he isn't currently provided 1-1. When he was observed by the LA EP there were 19 children and 6 staff. He unofficially receives 1-1 the entire time he is there but its split between staff and they can manage that without having needed to apply for additional funding for extra staff.

Sorry this was a ramble, due a decision on issuing in a fortnight and the caseworker seems to be of the opinion everything extra can be provided within expected sen support.

Sorry 2 year olds are 4 kids to 1 adult! I hope you get sorted x

It depends on how many children are what age. Eg in that 19 children you mention say 16 of them were 3 years and over and there were 3 2 year olds they only legally need 3 staff. Because 3 year olds are in a 1:8 ratio so they need 2 staff and the 2 year olds are in a 1:4 ratio there are only 3 of them so that is 1 member of staff.
If it was the other way around and there were 16 2 year olds they would need 4 members of staff for the 2 year olds and 1 member of staff for the remaining 3 year olds. I hope that makes sense.
However if there is an EHCP in place and it states he needs 1-2-1 support then that is what he should be getting. It doesn't have to be the same member of staff but someone who understands the child's needs.
So just to clarify 2-3 year olds are in a 1:4 ratio and can not be moved into up a ratio
And 3 plus years are 1:8 but can be moved down an age ratio
Eg if you have 12 children, 9 are 3yrs and 3 are 2yrs you only need 2 staff because the 9th 3yr old can be put in a ratio with the 2 year olds. In my head that makes sense I hope that's how it comes across
