Private school formal dinner dress code

Name change for this, previous threads could be outing.

DC is due to start at a private school in September.

We have been invited to a formal dinner with the head and their spouse.

Please forgive my absolute ignorance but what would one wear to this?

I don't want to get it wrong with either being over or underdressed. I am completely aware it wouldn't be remotely casual but still looking for advice as to what would be acceptable

Is it just you and your husband or is it all the new parents attending and where is the dinner to be held?

Ask what the dress code is? Ring the secretary’s office, they should know how formal it is

Alwaysaspiring · 12/01/2018 00:58

All the parents of new starters and current in pre prep. It is at the school.

Just ask. You won't be the only ones wondering. Schools are usually pretty good at anticipating questions so I am surprised they haven't told you, but it absolutely doesn't matter if you ask.

I'd have expected more of a reception (drinks and canapés) for a new parents evening.

If it's that, don't worry about dress code - some people will be straight from work (probably suits for both sexes). Others will be more dressed up. Some will throw on whatever doesn't have baby sick on it.

If it is formal, sit down dinner then wear what you'd wear to a business dinner (or dinner with the boss).

I'd say smart dress (not cocktail or more!) or trousers and smart jacket, nice bag.
The guideline of business dinner is a pretty good one I think!
