Dd's reception class has just received the list of 25, and wait for it....they're trying to outdo one another, (parents of course) first card she got was normal, disney effort, written by parents.
Second card, the child had written their names in (?morepersonal),
The third card she got went one better by having a handwritten message and by putting glitter and stars inside so when you opened it it went everywhere.
But yesterday that became so last year when a parent had put an individually wrapped Christmas chocolate inside the cards.
FFS the cards are expensive enough, but chocolates inside them! What next I wonder?

mears · 07/12/2006 12:49

Nailpolish - don't do it!! I think it is absolutely ridiculous to start this from this early age. Let them pick who they want to send them to. Once started, think how many cards you will have to get through all their years at school!!

nailpolish · 07/12/2006 12:51

oh ffs - chocs in cards/?

and as for that annoying confetti that goes eveyrwhere - ive had cards like that already this year (all from those with no children)

i may go half way - leave it til the last week of school and let dd1 give cards to her special mates in the group

and there's me all prepared to make gluey glittery xmas cards this weekend in order to keep ds1 (3 and a half) occupied doing something he really enjoys.

I think we might change the plan and just get a cheap pack and jolly them up them with some glitter/snow stuck on by ds1, that way I've solved the matching envelope problem and hopefully the darn things will be strong enough to actually stand up on display.

we got given a list of full names last year (but no addresses/phone numbers) no such list has arrived this year so perhaps the policy has changed. if I wasn't in such a rush at drop off and pick up times I'd remember to ask.

serenitynightholynight · 07/12/2006 13:02

NP - tbh, although we do do the whole class (although might not this year as I've decided DSs are old enough to sort it out themselves, so I'm sure they'll forget people) I couldn't tell you if they get one back from everyone, and I don't think DSs keep track either. They just like the ritual of coming home from school and blu-tacking them to the Hall wall. Mine always wanted to do it, so we did. If DD isn't bothered I'd just go with the 'wait 'til the last week and send to BFs' idea, which is a sensible compromise imo.

JunkInMyTrunk · 07/12/2006 13:04

Aaah that was what that was for. Walked all the home wondering why i needed a list of all the childrens names.

Loshad · 07/12/2006 13:07

never mind chocs in cards, one of DS4's classmates gives out - chocs with his party invites, chocs on his actual b'day, party bag at party then the next day at school more chocs as a thanks for coming to my party - I mean wtf , are we more than a trifle over indulged here?, only time i've ever run across it.

MerryPiffmas · 07/12/2006 13:10

I am so glad there are only 5 kids at dd's nursery
We know them all well and their parents.

lunavix · 07/12/2006 13:14

I asked for the list of kids at ds's pre-school.

There's around 70-odd kids, but they've written down what sessions they do on it. It's only first and last names, plus sessions which apparently isn't against confidentiality.

I've done a card for every child in a session ds attends - it's 30 children (31 with him). Bought, not made i might add!

I didn't know the etiquette- I know not everyone will do it, but I didn't want to be one of perhaps only a couple who don't. I'm just hoping he gets one or two in return - it'd break my heart thinking everyone else got a card to open and he didn't! I know it would upset him too (had an incident a few weeks back at children in need where they baked cookies for£1 - didn't know you had to pay before not after - and I have images of him being heartbroken cos everyone is in the kitchen and not him)

Blackduck · 07/12/2006 13:16

Honestly this is madness! Ds takes ONE card for all the nursery staff and thats it....I'm not writing 40+ of the bl**dy things - have enough of my own to do.....

nutcracker · 07/12/2006 13:16

Ds's nursery had a note on their door this morning that read ....

'Your child DOES NOT need to send a xmas card to every child in the nursery, they DO NOT know every child in the nursery'

LOL

I was mose relived.

nutcracker · 07/12/2006 13:17

Most relieved even.

Spicedfennelwine · 07/12/2006 13:21

mine write their own. and if they are too young or unmotivated, they don't get done.

ditto thank you notes.

it's good writing practice for them.

Blackduck · 07/12/2006 13:21

oh Nutty I want ds in that nursery!

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 07/12/2006 13:30

The list might be handy and they probably have done it for the nicest reasons. I only know the names of about 3 of dds buddies, but would hate to just send them to a couple of kids. Too young to start being cliquey.

Mind you I have no preference whatsoever about being the slackest mummy in the class or being the raging alpha mum making others cower behind their pushchairs. I couldn't care less!

I think parents are honestly doing it because they think it is the right thing to do, not to make others feel inadequate. I'm considering not even sending any to anyone this year. It is such a waste of time.

laneydaye · 07/12/2006 13:35

i requested a list for ds class, its nice for all the kids to get cards not just the popular ones. I buy my ds make your own packs and his closest friends get those but most supermarkets do a cheap brand of cards ie asda do a pack of 10 for 17p.. so dont be tight!

nailpolish · 07/12/2006 13:41

nutty waht a great nursery!

loshad - when i read your post i thought "some people have all the bloody time in the world dont they?????????"

either that or they are anthea-types

OP posts:
piglit · 07/12/2006 13:41

And the mums of the children who don't get cards will be posting on here saying "My poor Tobias didn't get a card from Algernon. Do you think I should confront his mother to try to find out what my poor lambkin has done to deserve this social isolation?"

It's only a few silly Christmas cards.....

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 07/12/2006 13:42

Don't do it nailey. I'm not.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 07/12/2006 13:43

Do you ever think "How nice that someone else has gone to all that trouble, which I never will?"

I just feel glad that other parents who can be bothered are out there making the effort.

Oh no, this has reminded me that I have to make a sheep costume by next week. Where do I start????

nailpolish · 07/12/2006 13:43

i could get dd1 to make a giant poster and put it on the school door

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY MATES AND TEACHERS

LOVE DD1

Love it nailpolish. Especially if it had a picture of a world on there and some trees or something.

Steppy1 · 07/12/2006 13:45

DS (nearly 6) has written all of his to all of his classmates because he wanted to...and I've written out DD's (nearly 4) for her kindergarten friends that SHE wanted to (she told me their names)

and yes, we've had chocolates in cards (but only 1 !) flitter in cards (just the one)...and a tesco santa face pre wrapped from the school cook

...DS and DD love it though and it all adds to the Christmas season of good will me thinks.......
