literacy and numeracy

I wonder how much DC are taught numbers and phonics at nursery?

What was their knowledge on starting reception?

Dd is due to start reception this year and can only recognise numbers up to 5 and about 10 letters.

Difficult to say because my son has taken an interest in numbers and letters so we have done some things with him. However, he can now blend CVC words, count in tens to 100 (kinda) and explain what gravity is. None of this is down to us.

DS2 is also starting in Sept.

He can write his name in a fashion, recognise a dozen letters, count to 15 (16 doesn't exist in his world 12-13-14-15-17-18-19). They have been taught many of the letter sounds, but every other letter is an S or the first letter of his name!

I'd say most important would be to recognise his name, get dressed, and follow instructions (haha!)

Should have said: there will be a complete range from kids reading to those who have no phonics knowledge come September.

The national strategies were scrapped 4 years ago and didn't apply to nursery and preschools

Ds1 can count to 100 and tell the time, and can recognise most letters and their sounds but he cant read yet, not even his name and he definitely does not have the hand and arm control to write. His drawing is still at toddler scribble stage.

According to his key teaher at preschool he is like a lot of boys who dont really want to write yet.

Once they start reception, they learn about 1 letter / day, they start blending, segmenting, etc.

Children learn letter - sound recognition, recognition of the initial sounds of spoken words, and tracing / writing of letters. They will also cover a lot of math in the first term (number writing, recognition, addition, etc).

Some schools expect children to write their own name to start with, some schools don't have any expectation of writing at all. I have heard about nurseries where they are not allowed to teach children to write.

In any case - the more they are exposed to the concepts, the easier the beginning is. Good luck with the transition.

DS has definitely been doing some Jolly Phonics at preschool - he comes home singing the songs, they colour in pictures etc. it's very low-key and regarded as fun though. I also know they do maths things but I think they just go with what the children are interested in and take it from there. They 'assess' them by playing little games like "can you out five blue counters in the blue tub?" But it's for their records more than anything. They tend to do a lot of practical things like pattern making, cooking and so on.
