Teaching the alpabet

Hi - I don't know if I have posted in the right place but here I go...

I am trying to gently teach my ds the alphabet and when reading books to him or pointing out letters, I sound them in a phonic sense eg.a (ahhh), b (buh) etc rather than A,B,C like in the song (if that makes sense).

I'm just wondering if I'm doing the right thing - my Mum has just said this is wrong! I thought this might help him read easier when the time comes. What does everyone else do??

generally phonics are the way to start . Ours learnt both at the same time though !

look up jolly phonics website .. it has a guideline for how to pronounce them and little actions you can teach too

You can't beat the old Alphabet Song, it's easy to learn and gets them to make the association when they are ready
then saying the name of the letter and making the sound it makes and saying letter A says a - IYSWIM
Sooner or later it will all click for them, but there's no tremendous hurry for pre-schoolers is there so make it fun

Thanks for your posts, all the advice sounds good. I'm not in a mad rush but had a thought that maybe I was doing completely the wrong thing! I'll check out the Jolly Phonics website and abit of retro alphabet song singing sounds like a good idea
