Learning whilst playing

Hi Everyone...

I am a Mum of 2, my son (2) and daughter (4) both go to a Football class called Little Kickers. I am amazed how much they have picked up, not just Footy skills, but confidence, they're language, even things like colours & numbers.

It seems that kids really do learn more when they are having fun. Do Nurseries & Schools work in the same way? And if not, why not?

Yes, pre-schools, nurseries and reception certainly work that way - you sound surprised?

If fact unless you send your child to a very academic school I would say most of primary education these days is about having 'fun' remembers being at nursery school where we had to sit in rows .

Thanks Ragwort - not surprised as such, more interested. I am currently looking for nurseries/schools that look at the CLIL programme!? I dont know whether you have heard of it? I don't really know if I know the full details.

It is basically teaching a subject whilst using another subject. Easy example... teaching French whilst learning Music. Friends say that the kids learn so much, it was just the footy class that triggered the train of thought!

Haha I was of the same era. We had to sit in rows, GOOOOD MOOOOORNING SIRRRR. I think that is why I give my kids more of a license to play and be adventurous. I wish I was as creative as them...!

yes play is very important in learning. Its something I feel very strongly about. Children are little sponges and they learn so much through play. All nurseries/pre schools even reception classes are based on this principle of learning through play, so I wouldnt worry about a school not providing well. The best thing you can do is visit some schools whilst class is on and see what feeling you get from your visit.
