Would DS fare better in pre-school with older or younger children?

DS is currently 3.5 and currently goes to private nursery. He was offered a place at the school nursery from August in the afternoons (he'll still go to private nursery too) but the school phoned me today to see if we want a morning place. Here traditionally the morning places have been for pre-school year and more of the afternoon children are ante-pre-school - from asking the secretary he'd be the youngest in the mornings (as he will probably be when he goes to school) but not so in the afternoon (as there will be some, but not a huge amount of, ante-pre-school children in the afternoon group).

So I just wonder whether it would be best to take the morning offer where he'll be up to 13 months younger than the oldest children (who've been deferred) but they'll all be going to school next year or stick with the afternoon where some of the children won't be going to school next year (as indeed he might not if we choose to defer which is still very much up in the air), but he'll might not seem so young and so might gain more confidence. He seems quite young to me to be starting pre-school nursery at 3.8 as DD was 4.2 when she went and seemed a lot readier.

We have to tell the school tomorrow.

We're in Scotland in case anyone thinks the ages sound wrong!

I think that depends very much on the child.
Dd1 worked well at the older end because she liked being responsible.
Dd2 worked well at the younger end because she saw the older ones as something to aspire to. She would change her behaviour to fit in.
Ds varies depending on what he's doing, but probably slightly better being at the younger end.
