Help required explaining to Sept Baby why a load of her friends are now at school & she's not

DD1 has 1st September birthday so she has another year at pre-school, which I'm quite glad about in the long term since I'd rather she was the absolute oldest, rather than absolute youngest in her year . Unfortunately we walk passed the local primary on our way back from pre-school & yesterday she met a load of her friends from last year coming out of there in their new uniforms & all excited.

She does have some friends left at the pre-school (thank god) but I'm having trouble explaining an arbitrary cut-off date to someone who's only just beginning to grasp the calendar! So far I've come up with 1) it's better to be the eldest person in your class rather than the youngest, 2) pre-school is free-play and therefore more fun than big school and 3) we'll still see your friends after bith schools at the park.

Any better / more comforting explanations would be most welcome.

I had the same with DD (October birthday) I said that they're little bit older than you so they are allowed to go to school but you had to be 4 before term started so you'll be going next year instead.
