Pre-School - how do I apply??

My son has recently turned two and I've been told by a number of people that I need to register him for pre-school.

I know that there are different kinds (nurseries, ones attached to primary schools etc) but I don't understand how I apply for a place, I'm right on the edge of Reading Borough Council but most of the local schools are actually Wokingham Council so I don't know if I am meant to apply for a place directly with the nursery/pre-school or if I am meant to get a form from the local council, I can't really find any decent information that tells me what to do.

In my local area (Cumbria) we can get a form from the Education Services, fill it in and take it in to our chosen nursery/ pre-school. In truth though, I actually just contacted our choice of pre-school direct and went in for a chat and discussion and signed up direct.

Not very experienced in this area, but hopefully someone else is of more assistance :)

In my borough it's done directly through the pre-school.
If you ring up they may say there will be open days for lots of prospective parents or individual appointments to view the pre-school.
Application forms were given when we looked around.

We looked when DD was 2 1/2 but this (Sept/Oct) is the time of year for open days around here.

I meant to say that you ring up the pre-school not the council here.
