Best tinned food options for a seven-day emergency food hamper

In light of the recent government guidelines in preparedness for any emergency. I am trying to put together a 7 day emergency food hamper. I do not normally eat tin food. What are your favourite tin food options? Is there really any difference between supermarket own brands. Have you started preparing, if so, what are you storing away?

Haggis
Fray Bentos pies
Bacon grill
Those manky tinned burgers in onion gravy
Spam

Not tinned but flour and yeast.
When the supermarkets were getting stripped for storm arwen, all the bread went but the flour and yeast were in abundance.

Things I could make from the cupboard that we would actually eat
tuna pasta
beans on something
chopped tomato’s / passata (again on pasta)
butter chicken sauce (but no chicken)
may get some tinned stew/ chicken in sauce/ pesto to go with pasta
wonder if you can get cheese sauce in a tin

may reignite my dream of owning a pressure canner

You can get cheese sauce granules - normally with the gravy

Since 'The beast from the east' we've kept a store of food, but only stuff we actually use so can rotate.

Food that can be eaten cold.
Tins of beans and spaghetti - (M&S 50p ones are great).
Corned beef, spam, hot dog sausages.
Tinned fruit, custard, rice pudding.
Cereals.
Loads of bread in the freezer.
Crackers and biscuits.
Powdered milk.

Idahooan mash is pretty good if you can heat water. Same for quick cook pasta.

We have a wood burner with a kettle on it. We always have a lot of wood.

Lots of cold packs in the freezer and a cool box on standby. Cheese/butter is fine out of the fridge for a while but after that I'd put it in the cool box then keep that outside.

We've got some bottled water and loads of starbucks coffee in the glass bottles that don't need a fridge (costco!). I need my coffee.

Wine 🤪

Our electrics are dodgy in heavy rain so we have a cupboard full of candles, matches, powerbanks, a couple of rechargeable lanterns and a fully charged solar/wind up radio/torch combo.

Books, colouring books, art stuff, board games etc in case of boredom.

You sound very organised indeed 👍 😃
Storage would be a real issue for us, we live in a tiny property, not much storage available, not sure how we would get around this problem. Recently De-cluttered, so we are now down to the basics of everything. I feel quite liberated though😆
I really like the sound of the mashed potato, going to take a look at that now. Thank you for your advice, very helpful 👍 😊

Wasn't there a song called 'spam?' 😃 😀
The Fray Bentos pie, I will reluctantly, give it a try. I think the Haggis and burgers might be pushing it 😆 🤣 😂

I am not sure if I am making this up. I seem to recall cheese and white sauce granules. As I say, I could be making this up 😆 😂

I definitely need to look at tinned vegetables, just to bulk things out 👍

Colouring books is such a good idea. We need to keep ourselves entertained. I might try find some jigsaws too. I wish I could knit 😆

Ive just remembered fruit cake lasts forever out of the fridge - adding one of those. Also peanut butter and crackers. I think I could last for three days on those.

Fruit cake is such a clever idea 👌

Not food but I had a thought today. We have an ooni pizza oven and a barbecue. Both run off gas - and we have two canisters here but they’re out of gas

it hadn’t occurred to me to get them refilled any time soon but am going to get them topped up again this weekend - so for any of you out there with similar, it’ll cook your stored food in case of loss of power

I totally agree with you. I am unsure whether M&S tins are any better than the cheaper versions. Watched a blogger on YouTube yesterday, testing tinned chicken tikka masala from Aldi and M&S. Aldi, I think it was £1.65 v M&S £4.50. I thought the Aldi one looked nicer, thicker sauce, natural colour. M&S sauce was very orange and a bit watery. His conclusion was that M&S tasted slightly better, but the Aldi one was absolutely fine, he couldn't justify paying more for the M&S version. I think I am going to look at the cheaper brands 👍

Tinned soup from M&S as good as or better than Heinz

So I had a bit of a dilemma with this as we don't normally eat much tinned food (more likely to go for a freezer stash!) so I didn't want to prep a cupboard full of food that would never get eaten.

So I ended up doing a meal plan for 3 days and doubled it so that we had 6 days worth (I know there would always be enough in the fridge/freezer for the first few days before it turned) so I think we would be ok for about 10 days. We do go camping so have a camping stove so weather permitting would be fine to hear stuff up but I know a few of the options can be eaten cold.

I have only used things that I know we would incorporate into meals in normal times so my next step is to list the use by dates to make sure they don't go to waste...have popped below my plan in case it is of interest! It helped me to feel sane by having an end 'tin' in sight.

Breakfasts:
6 long life milks: oat, almond, coconut
Cereal
Granola
Oats

Lunches:
Baked beans / oat cakes / rye bread (the biona one has a crazy long use by date)
Tins of tomato soup / oat cakes / rye bread
Veg / tofu / cashews / rice packet

Dinners:
Gnocchi, pesto and nuts
Tuna, veg, pasta, tinned toms
Baked beans and sausages and grains (went for the merchant gourmet ones as can be eaten hot or cold)

Fruit: tinned peaches, tinned pineapple, jar of mango

Veg: tinned peas, tinned sweet corn, jar peppers, beetroot

Morale snacks: cereal bars, chocolate, sweets, custard, jelly pots

I ended up looking what was on offer on ocado and they kept doing good discounts on their longer life / tinned foods so have just gone for what was well rated! I found it helpful to do online so didn't end up in a faff in store.

Tinned/packet custard is a good idea. Never usually buy this but it would go down well with all the tinned fruit in the apocalypse! You need comfort food of some sort.

We quite like the aunt Bessie custard pack that you add water too. Like you say good with the tinned fruit.

I will look up Aunt Bessie's. The name 'Aunt Bessie' makes it sound even more of a comfort food when disaster strikes! 😂

You have really thought about this and it sounds really good. We normally have some food in the freezer, which as you say, will last a few days. My understanding is that freezer food will last about 48 hours if the freezer is full or 24 hours if the freezer is half full. Fridge- food dairy and meat products start to degrade within 4 hours, at 12 hours we should not use.
I really like your morale snacks and will stock up on the bars.
Sound advice regarding looking at discounted tinned food through Ocado 👍

If you have freezer space, fill with used milk/drink bottles of water. It helps with the running costs, helps keep the freezer cold in a power cut and you'll have drinking water.
