Can aquarium activated carbon be used in a home drinking water filter?

Water filter question. Bit of a deep dive for most preppers but I'm looking to build my own drinking water filtration system. Stored drinking water will only get you so far. When you eventually run out, you need a more sustainable supply of fresh clean drinking water. Activated Carbon/charcoal is a very good filtering medium, but its expensive. Has anyone got any suggestions where I can get some without a second mortgage?

I can see on-line that activated carbon/charcoal for fish ponds and aquariums is cheaper, but can this be used for filtering water for human consumption? If the info is out there, I cant find it. Thanks in advance.

Can't help with the charcoal, but I have one of these. Use it all the time for our tap water because it tastes vile. Takes everything out. A friend recommended it, all the overseas volunteers used then when he was volunteering in Africa.
