Are you all prepping for power cuts?

BBC reported the other day about possible power cuts this winter due to gas shortage. Other than having a few torch light and candles, are you all prepping with anything else?

Austria released blackout supermarket procedures last week.

day 1- all shops remain closed
day 2 - all supermarkets will give out a pre prepared bag of fresh food for FREE.
day 3- supermarkets will have pre prepared bags of store cupboard/ or baby essentials / bread will be available to buy at fixed price per bag ( some things like bread FREE)

Nobody will be able to actually go inside the stores and choose themselves.

Households told to keep €100 per person in cash at home. Presumably to pay for essentials whilst cards down.

All households should try and be self sufficient in majority of food for 14 days if possible. Ie the supermarket bags given out are to supplement

I'm involved in business continuity for work (civil service) and the complacency most people have towards the possibility of power cuts is astounding. Senior people just going "it'll never happen" and refusing to engage with preparations. Luckily I've found someone who likes a good plan so between us we've got reasonably robust plans and are planning some stealth comms to encourage people to prep. I nicked a whole load of stuff from Finland's guidance as it is really good. And if disaster happens I'll be running the organisation as none of the more senior people will be contactable. Grin

Is anyone else keeping an eye on gridwatch? I like seeing how power demand fluctuates during the day. You can see demand is higher than it has been at the moment.

But it probably won't happen will it?
It's like absolute last resort.

And we have companies like AmpX coming in with smart tech to analyse grid use and direct energy to where it will be needed

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2022 09:54

You think Amp X will rescue us this winter Hungry? Please can you show us information about this, because all I could find was a concept and some early experiments and battery storage in Scotland.

Id like to see how it would cope with our creaking grid.

Hopefully it won't happen, hopefully the demand flexibility service will be enough to keep things stable, but the fact that multiple countries are preparing for grid disruption and advises their citizens to prepare, means that we should be ready too. We rely heavily on interconnectors from countries including France and if France has widespread power cuts, do you think they will be exporting to us at that point?

bellinisurge · 07/12/2022 09:58

@Caspianberg - crikey. No wonder people like Survival Lily on YouTube are getting twitchy. She's more an outdoor skills person rather than a prepper. Or she was. She's based in Austria.

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Do you really think there is a global shortage of energy?

From the few threads I have read from you, you seem to be trustworthy.
Sorry to say I do not trust all posters on this type of subject. Far from it.
Thanks.

I am here but battling to post on this thread.

So this is a test post

I have no power for 8 hrs today

Rescue?

Now I know you have a tin foil hat on.

Trollsintheforest · 07/12/2022 13:39

We’ve heard today in Scandinavia that crucial dates to save electricity are between the 9th-18th, or it might be cut off in some areas. We’ve being given information of what we have to have at home to cope, so noone can say we have not been warned or have not had time to prepare.

I mean, different countries have different reliance and usage of gas. I messaged a relative who works in this field and what his thoughts on power shortages and blackout likelihood are.

He replied "no greater than last year".

Why would you not think there is a global shortage of power. It’s all over the news.

Exactly.

Plus, as it has to be pointed out regularly - this is the Preppers board. The tin foil hat comment from the same poster is unhelpful and unnecessary.

justasking111 · 07/12/2022 16:12

Well I'm organised as best I can. Lived through the power cuts in the seventies, will do it again if needs be

Pelo2022 · 07/12/2022 16:25

Just had this email

What would be the impact?

If emergency power cuts are needed, you could have a power cut for at least three hours at a time, once or twice a day. The power cut would affect all power in your home including lighting, heating, electrical cooking appliances, wi-fi and some landline phones.

How can I prepare?

If needed the power cuts would be scheduled in blocks. Every property has a block letter and a rota will be announced publicly in the unlikely event of emergency power cuts happening.
Your rota block letter is E

If you want to check it, you can go to www.powercut105.com/findoperatorr_ or by looking at the top of your latest energy bill. Keep it safe as it will help you find out when you’ll be without power if power cuts are needed.

No homes are exempt, even if you are an Extra Care Register customer. Due to the scale and size of demand, electricity network operators cannot supply generators/backup power to customers for these emergencies.

Did we have black outs across the UK last year?

It says it all and if you can't understand that then there's not going to be much telling you. You want to be panicked. Enjoy.

indignatio · 07/12/2022 18:38

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy
I didn't. I was without power courtesy of Eunice. I recall a date the public were aware of for a buy in of power at huge expense. So, no, no formal planned blackouts , but no sense of security and managed knife edge situation

indignatio · 07/12/2022 18:39

I don't do panicked, I do prepping

Lol I'm not sure Liam Neeson would feature in that film! :D

I'm glad we don't have gas (we're on heating oil and electric) but it sounds pretty grim. My Mum is a frail 82 year old and I can't bear to think of her heating going off.

Your oil fired boiler won't work in a power cut though

Pelo2022 · 07/12/2022 19:18

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat it says electricity north west Smile

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/12/2022 19:21

That's your provider, I presume.

I'm as ready as I'm going to be. But no it's getting really cold I'm not looking forward to it.

I might get the battery back up bulbs. Suddenly the thought of sitting in the cold dark by the glow of my torches is making me feel very depressed.
