Rises in food costs coming

I was reading this morning and came across this article. Not sure if it's something to be worried about or another sensationalist headline but stuff like this petrifies me.

Bank of England boss predicts apocalyptic food costs

I have prepped for a long time but have basically run down my supplies to nothing as we are about to rip our house apart. Once the work is done I'll start building up my stores again and will have a lot more space to put things. I just find things like this quite worrying. I have a genuine fear of not being able to feed my kids. Do you think scenarios like this are likely?

Bit random- found this out today -Potatoes have shrunk by an inch due to the heatwaves in 2018.
I have friends in the US who are prepping to grow their own veg as foods aren’t making it to stores for various reasons.

Try not to panic buy, that’ll drive prices up even more.

Our kitchen garden has been decimated due to building work and Im about to start thinking about putting it back together. I'd planned on turning some of it over to flowers but Im rethinking that plan and putting in more perenial veg like asparagus and rhubarb and also putting in more berries which are expensive.

CafeCremeMerci · 28/06/2022 15:21

I saw the title and thought 'what DO you mean Are Coming?? That HAVE come'. But then saw the date!!

I stock up on anything I do use when it's on offer. But I eat mostly fresh veg & cauldron vegetarian tofu & sausages. I'm vegetarian & diet restricted due to health issues. There isn't a lot of packaged food I'm able to eat, so not too much I can buy to store. In prep for covid I did buy some cans of food that I can eat on the very odd occasion & I still have those, but if I eat them
often I'll need to go on more medication for my health issues.

So essentially I'll have to hunt down the few things I can eat (Brocolli, cauli, leafy greens, courgettes, cheese) & pay what I have to pay. I suppose 'fortunately' there's only me to feed, but 's only me to pay the mortgage & bills too.

best of luck everyone 🌸

I can cope with some price rises but the rumours I'm hearing would mean serious shortages of basic staples. I'm currently starting my winter prep (we can get badly snowed up) the one that seriously concerns me is wheat, dairy we can cope with as my neighbour is a dairy farmer and we do help each other out. Oil could be an issue but I'll use lard etc if needed. I'm going to be trying to be as self sufficient as possible but I'm lucky to have the space to do that, hopefully the more people who do grow their own the less demand for supplies in the shops

Can you share what you have heard will be short of at all? Are you talking flour and milk or more bits? Thank you x

BlackeyedSusan · 28/06/2022 23:41

chicken feed is going up in price... so presumably eggs and chicken.

wheat: lots stuck in ukrainian storage and less in the ground this year. it will have a knock on effect on other carbs... as people swap to say, rice...or potatoes

Thank you, yes that makes sense.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 00:27

fucking bloody hell.

savers chicken curry has gone up by over 100% since last week.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 00:28

which makes me think, if you can afford extra of the stuff you use regularly get a little bit in now.

sunnyside238 · 30/06/2022 09:23

Just doing online food shop

Cheese up from £2.50 last week to £2.85?!

No milk available???

A lot of other items also unavailable

I'm thinking of stocking up on as much dry ingredients as I can now as things are going up at a ridiculous rate and I'm worried we won't be able to get hold of staple items

Jesus. How much did it used to be? Do you think this is the end of Loss Leaders which is what I assume those products have been for years.

Cheapo instant noodles which were 15p a pack for seemingly decades are still only 20p. Wondering if they are something that's also going to double overnight.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 11:10

They are a fairly new product to the online shop. Used to be in store at about the same price, disappeared and reappeared at 69p for about two weeks, now £1.49. I bought a few at 69p. At 1.49 you may as well buy the bog standard version and get more meat.

ds likes currry and it is one of our emergency meals. along with a tin of savers carrots and savers peas and microwave rice.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 11:12

I suspect they will go up significantly. or disappear altogether and you have to buy the next level up which will be considerably more.

Overall, I expect prices to rise for a while longer then possibly stabilise for a while again. When that will be I don't know, but quite a while away yet. at least another year as this years hgarvest will be down. we have had reasonably constant food prices for quite a while until a few months ago when it all started going bonkers.

I have planted potatoes and hope some will grow.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 11:13

If not I have about fifty million packs of slightly post bbd wholemeal spaghetti

BlackeyedSusan · 30/06/2022 11:14

because it is a smaller pack size than other pasta and fits in the gaps.

Tigerblue4 · 30/06/2022 14:55

I'm sure you've seen Tescos are in talks with Heinz over prices hey feel are excessive and don't want to pass onto customer. Consequently Heinz products will run short in some stores. Good on Tescos, but obviously two sides to every story and Heinz could genuinely need to charge higher sale prices.

Many shoppers will be turning to shops own brand, and adjusting what they have for meals.

The problem is we've only got so much in the way of funds and space when trying to build up our food store. One thing I've been doing is using my DD's lentils up (living away from home for a year), but have discovered red lentils add nicely to my tomato sauce, so I bought a large bag the other day. Tempted to get another bag, but then I have to have the pasta as well to go with meal.

Is anyone else wondering if the dry weather is going to exacerbate an already tough time as crops aren’t growing as well as normally might? I’m not a farmer but even our lawn looks dried out and hasn’t needed cutting for over a month.
i have 3 or so weeks worth of food in usually as we are very rural and we have plenty of space and a Small chest freezer but other than jars of beans I’m wondering how to improve this as don’t want anything that could be ruined by power cuts or eaten by mice. I will get a big bag of rice (happy to keep this inside as we’ve never had mice indoors here ) . And I am thinking of finding larger bags of lentils perhaps and a few extra tinned tomatoes now and again and not sure what else !

I read earlier that quite a half the British potato crop was expected to fail, so that will increase prices.
Onions and carrots as well, but not quite as bad as half.

Try some dried beans and TVP veggie mince. If you keep that and rice in plastic sealed food buckets with moisture absorbers it should keep the mice away. Dried bay leaves in the buckets will stop weavils.

Make sure you have lots of chilli sauce (and good ventilation after eating) 😉

IRememberXanadu · 13/08/2022 08:21

The issue for me is that I'm calorie counting and most stuff you can stock up on is carb heavy it seems...

byvirtue · 13/08/2022 08:31

I live in the countryside and anecdotally (ie down the pub) they are reporting poor harvests/yields this year as it’s been so dry. Wheat/barley has a lower % of moisture than it should have. Sugar beet and potatoes smaller. We are surrounded by fields of onions and they are the size of golf balls and are due for harvest in the next 2 weeks.

I keep chickens and my feed has gone up £3 a bag, this isn’t unique to the UK I follow people in the US who’s chicken feed has gone up $5.

I’ve never been a prepper before but I’m prepping now to put off the increase in food prices. I’m also focusing on growing my own veggies for the winter. I’ve only really bothered with summer crops but I’m now preserving those and putting in new for autumn winter.

KatieBenz · 13/08/2022 08:54

Tbh, I’ve been doing this for months. Not only because of spiralling costs, but also because of availability. Our local supermarket often has gaps on the shelves. I’ve got a good supply of cans and dried goods, coffee and tea. I’ve also built up a stock of gluten free stuff as youngest is a coeliac and gluten free products, as well as being extremely expensive are sometimes hard to find in our local shops.
It’s not panic buying, just adding a few non- perishable extras to each shop.

Caspianberg · 13/08/2022 10:15

im finding shelves empty here (not uk)
ie basic bread flour has been out of stock since May. It’s about 0.70 cents, then next flour up is branded at €2.40 so quite an increase. They had some a few days ago so I bought 8. Cheaper homemade pizzas

bellinisurge · 13/08/2022 12:52

DH saw this article- we are on holiday at the moment. Basically he is now fully on board with me doing as much canning and dehydrating as I can when we get home. And wants to join in.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/08/2022 13:20

That's good news Bellini.

Ex is still oblivious. Not a clue how much things cost. (We are sharing tasks so he does the football run in exchange for the shopping run. But it marks me he is not listening to what I am saying about price rises)
