Preppers

What next to prep for?

Does anyone have a crystal ball Grin - I suppose that is ironic as preppers don’t need a crystal ball because they are already prepared.

But, Brexit stashes have been used up and hopefully no longer on the preppers list.

We are a fair way along in a pandemic, apart from a few weeks at the start, supply has ironed out to a great extent. Boy was I pleased to have a store of stuff to use in the early scary days though.

What’s next. Any guesses?

So... million dollar question, what would you say is the biggest threat right now/in the next 2/4 years? Still covid lockdowns and brexit related shortages?

Sideorderofchips · 05/05/2021 16:38

Well here in Jersey it's the French cutting off our electricity

AlohaMolly · 05/05/2021 16:41

That sounds pretty bloody nasty? I’m so out of the loop, news wise, since I took a step back at Christmas because covid news was just battering me.

Sideorderofchips · 05/05/2021 17:53

Yeah it's all to do with fishing rights post brexit

Doubt they will but you never know

BiddyPop · 06/05/2021 09:54

I can see why you have lots of solar power banks and batteries then Chips, I hope it doesn't come to that though

DogInATent · 08/05/2021 21:58

Cyber Polygon is a training/resilience conference. It's an annual event. Nothing that needs me to watch a video on a far-right conspiracy fruitloop provider video service like BitChute.

This sort of resilience wargaming is quite normal.

Imsayingnothing · 08/05/2021 23:58

It's an ice age farmer video, not a far right fruit loop video. He talks a lot about food chains, supply issues etc. A lot of 'preppers' follow him and like his work. He's got his own website as well for those who don't want to watch on bitchute it's just that's where I saw the video.

Just to say as well the world economic forum also held event 201 which was a practice run of what we went through with covid-19.

Sometimes practice runs turn out real.

The other two things which might affect a lot of people this year are inflation, especially on items such as food, and rent arrears and the end of eviction bans.

Legoandloldolls · 09/05/2021 01:42

I am seeing big gaps in kids clothes right now. Especially school clothes so I try to have the next sizes up. Obviously the kids need much less clothes now ( lockdown means no playdates, parties or clubs) but having a few essentials ìn the next size up even if its second hand.

I am running down my old prep still as it's going out of date.

I have a list of what in need in for 6-8 weeks of food prep which would get me through another March 2020 situation.

I had more spare cash I would invest in solar panels as with these emission targets we will be seeing big rises I think.

I have a prep list and around £400 on the list as I think I was pretty good preparing for covid in Jan 2020. It's ok if you hear the rumblings first. While others was laughing and shouting poppycock, I was getting ready. Not so sure I would be so ready to cope with another March 2020, but I wouldnt be in empty Tesco open mouthed either.

Hopefully everyone has learnt a little prepping from that

Neonprint · 09/05/2021 04:07

But tesco wasn't empty even at the peak of panic buying. Justify the prepping all you want but don't make stuff up.

Neome · 09/05/2021 04:17

Sometimes not going to Tesco is a nice choice to have Neonprint 🙂

@Neonprint

But tesco wasn't empty even at the peak of panic buying. Justify the prepping all you want but don't make stuff up.
The shops weren’t empty but It was incredibly difficult to get hold of toilet roll in my county and the next. I get mine delivered from who gives a crap and like a PP had heard rumblings from end of January last year so had a good stock in already. It was very difficult to get hold of flour for a good six weeks as well and, as a result, gluten free flour! DS is gluten intolerant and it would have been that bit more miserable an experience for 3 year old him if I hadn’t have had a good supply of GF flour. Same with pasta - ‘normal’ stuff like gold dust so people started buying the GF stuff and again, hard to get hold of. So no, the shops weren’t empty but they were empty of stuff I would have needed.

Similarly, when it was announced we all had to stay home, my boss didn’t have enough money to pay us all our furlough wages for those few weeks before the funding came through for him, so he paid us all half wages. I earn less than £220 a week, so if I hadn’t have had a months supply of food I’d have been really stuck.

It’s not always as simple as ‘well the shops weren’t empty!’

AlohaMolly · 09/05/2021 07:04

Also, at the time, people were so scared - I was terrified of going to the supermarket. In the end, I didn’t need to buy anything for a month and didn’t physically go to the shops for another two weeks. It felt like I was doing the right thing and leaving the shops for those who couldn’t internet shop or something and doing my bit to stop the spread.

DogInATent · 09/05/2021 10:03

Sometimes practice runs turn out real.

Having been involved in a regional resilience forum, the whole point of the practice is to be as realistic as possible. It's a cheap shot for conspiracy theorists to point at an historic exercise and make suspicious noises. There are hundreds of resilience exercises carried out each year in the UK/EU, so the chances of being able to point to one from the last ten years that closely matches an actual event are extremely high. It would be rarer to find an event that hasn't been wargamed in the last ten years.

If you've got a link to a video not on BitChute that would be appreciated. I'd rather not give any support to that particular platform. YT may have it's faults, but it does its best to screen out the rightwing extremists and hatemongers.

Maybe others won't agree, but I think a lot of the shortages locally seemed to be created by the public. Loo roll was being hoarded rather then the country running out due to a usage-demand imbalance. Local 'help' groups managed to create a nappy shortage by folk buying up whatever they could find and then posting on Facebook that they'd got some if anyone needed it. It's made me think about what might genuinely be in short supply plus the false shortages that can be created through human behaviours.

Well anyone interested can go and look up the information on the world economic forum website. Where it's straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.

Also I don't know if the ice age farmer video is on YouTube as they seem to be removing everything which is not following their narrative. Ice age farmer has had his videos removed and had the warnings his channel will be deleted so that's probably why he's been having to use other platforms to share information. He does have his own website if anyone is interested in his work so that's another option as well.

All the shops where I live had shortages, the closest supermarket to us had virtually nothing but peanuts and alcohol for weeks and weeks, anytime they got a delivery of bread and milk and a small amount of other items they were gone within the hour. I don't know if this was down to people panic buying or down to supply issues or down to something else. It did cause a few fights between people, I saw a couple of people physically fighting over the last box of eggs one day. I guess people might want to avoid having to be in that situation in those times.

I think the problem with food will be inflation now.

Imsayingnothing · 09/05/2021 11:08

@Legoandloldolls yes I've noticed it hard to get children's clothes and shoes as well. There seems to be a lot of out of stock items. And of course the price increases as well. If you are good at making clothes then this might come in handy in the future.

Sideorderofchips · 09/05/2021 12:01

Hmm missed all the deleted posts.

Preparedness exercises held by regional agencies are just an official version of a home prepper being prepared.

Yes alot of shortages during the covid were due to public panic buying. No one really understood what covid was and how it spread because it was all new.

However preppers didn't need to take part in panic buying because they were already prepared.

Legoandloldolls · 09/05/2021 13:46

@Imsayingnothing I have a sewing machine and I'm a prolific sewer, but material is to expensive for me to be tempted to make my own.

Looking around for a few things the next size up on Ebay, market place or vinted is what I do

Imsayingnothing · 09/05/2021 14:36

Yes @Legoandloldolls I was thinking that might be the case with fabric now. Suppose getting second hand at least you can alter them if need be. It's a good skill to have.

DogInATent · 10/05/2021 08:08

Having a read of his website I can see why YT are removing his videos. It's entirely based on QAnon and Far Right conspiracy theories and ideologies. I know some of those groups have good prepping strategies, but the cost is too high to follow them for that.

Imsayingnothing · 10/05/2021 13:52

Well I think spreading information about how to be more self sufficient is good as a prepping strategy, regardless of someone's political leanings. I don't know about anyone else but part of the reason I prep is so that I don't have to be one of the people waiting for government assistance which may or may not come and may or may not be sufficient.

I posted on chat and have not had much of a response yet.

Can anyone please tell me the implications for this USA fuel cyber attack state of emergency, please?
