What next to prep for?

Does anyone have a crystal ball Grin - I suppose that is ironic as preppers don’t need a crystal ball because they are already prepared.

But, Brexit stashes have been used up and hopefully no longer on the preppers list.

We are a fair way along in a pandemic, apart from a few weeks at the start, supply has ironed out to a great extent. Boy was I pleased to have a store of stuff to use in the early scary days though.

What’s next. Any guesses?

I have refined my brexit cupboard. I will just have a few weeks back up stock, always, of fewer items.
Eg longer fear a worldwide caper and black olive shortage and Covid has taught me I can do just fine without of need be. Covid has focussed things on essentials.

lightand · 22/04/2021 11:00

I think that is where I am at too.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/04/2021 09:59

Hmmm...i might weed out some stuff that we didn't use much.

DogInATent · 25/04/2021 14:25

@ifonly4

I was wondering if India's exports will be affected, given the awful situation they're in, will surely affect factories.
We rely on India for a large art of the Covid vaccinations being given in the UK. They've already announced that those exports will be reduced to meet domestic demand.
BlackeyedSusan · 25/04/2021 22:55

they definitely need those vaccines right now, it is awful over there. I wish we could do more.

AdoraBell · 28/04/2021 21:40

There’s a fund raising for machines, can’t remember the name, that produce oxygen.

I saw it on BBC, think it’s British Asian appeal, I’ll see if I can find it again.

AdoraBell · 28/04/2021 21:47

British Asian Trust.

They have a just giving page. The machines kind of scrub the open air and extract oxygen which can make be used.

I’m in SW, news item yesterday showed a farm with spring oats. Because we’ve had almost no rain for a month the crop isn’t growing. The field looked like it needs weeding rather than a crop.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/04/2021 23:43

that's worrying about the oats. weather is all the wrong way round recently. dry springs wet summers

BlackeyedSusan · 01/05/2021 01:48

Things needed to prep for:
Power cut
Water cut off
Water leaks
Fire
Unemployment (savings,etc)
Banking issues ( account with different banks, cash at home)
Crime ( burglary, car crime, first aid)
Accidents: first aid kit and knowledge
Flooding ( we are on top of a hill but rain coming in from above or under doors.
Solar storm?
Wave three/ lockdown four. (Hoping not, but,you know, India...)
Any Brexit related fall out as more deadlines hove into view
Inflation or interest rate rises
Volcano... what will the effect of a big Icelandic volcano erupts again (kids teacher got stuck on holiday)
Gas leak
Health issues or accidents
Terrorism. Could be almost anything. But getting home if transport closed, to random events that have s knock on effect elsewhere as it effects trade
Random events like ships getting stuck in canals...

I have kept topping up preps, but not a doomsday prepper. I find it difficult to go out sometimes for various reasons, so I keep a stock of food and drink. I think there will be more Lockdowns, though a bit more optimistic due to vaccination programme. Weather is another one, we had such an awful winter, it's sensible to have some food in. Possibly some torches/batteries incase of a power cut. The other reason I keep preps topped up, the price of food keeps going up and definitely less choice. There are many GF items I just cannot get now.

Have you used the Olio app? I am on a tight budget and have had to resort to getting DS’ gluten free stuff from olio. People get out of date stuff from supermarkets, put it on the app for free and you can claim it and go and get it!
megletthesecond · 01/05/2021 07:13

I'm rotating and whittling down things a little bit for a few weeks.
I was going to make a list and restock come July. I'm not convinced we won't have a brief winter lockdown.

Any of you prepping for a cyber attack type event that knocks everything out or a CME or EMP type event?

Hagqueen · 03/05/2021 12:44

I’ve rundown my pantry a small amount - But generally, I am always staying prepped for my security rather than an event.

I like a month of supplies in the event I’m unwell or having to self isolate etc, and then in case of any unexpected expenses meaning I need a cheep food bill (working on my financial prepping too!).

I am however, working on my ‘household’ preps. I’ve pulled focus off food and cleaning/toiletries and more towards stuff like, spare lightbulbs, a good car kit, first aid etc

What form of prepping would we need to do for this?

Imsayingnothing · 03/05/2021 21:02

Depends on your circumstances but if people are reliant on medical items that are electronic or need a fridge to keep things cold, that could be problematic. In some of those circumstances everything could be switched off. It could be a very bad situation.

Sideorderofchips · 03/05/2021 21:54

Yy to olio

I'm an olio squad captain in jersey and it is amazing what we can save and give away from shops and wholesalers.

With regards to prepping to cme, emp or a power outtage you need to think of several things.

Food - cooking, storage. You won't have gas or electric (gas uses to pumps to get to your house). Is your food long life? What about fridge and freezer. How will you cook it? You bbq outside when you have food and your neighbours don't...
Water- no power, no water.
Waste- not just your bins but human waste. No power, no water, sewage backs up. No toilets
Heating - no gas, no power no heating unless you are oil fired. And that can run out.
Medication- what you have is all you will have
Security - you got food and water? Someone else will want it.

I recommend watching blackout a BBC Docudrama and reading one second after if you are genuinely interested in these scenarios

Sideorderofchips · 03/05/2021 21:56

Also I forgot light sources.

Most people have a torch. Or a couple of candles.

Long term what would you use, especially in winter months. Candles are great but safety

Also if you are prepping for long term power loss don't forget your pets. They need food and water accounted for too.

A couple of us have mentioned CME earlier in the thread, and EMP can be considered as a variation on the theme. For the domestic prepper I'm not sure there's much that can be practically added to the usual resilience toolkit. If you take the extreme of a Carrington Event level disruption them power, utilities, civil services, transport and food manufacture and distribution are all likely to be severely impacted. Any electronic devices could be disabled, and perhaps worryingly for preppers this could include solar panels and battery systems, and even generators you may be hoping to rely upon. You'd also assume that Stay In Place would be the order of the day as modern car electronics are at risk.

Because communications are vulnerable, putting a domestic am/fm radio and a cheap BMR/amateur radio handset in a Faraday box could be useful. But you'd need to think about how you'd power/charge them.

BiddyPop · 04/05/2021 14:38

I'm just trying to work on going through existing stocks to bring pantry back to a normal level of preparedness (and to take account of how our shopping/cooking/eating has changed in the past 18 months!), and to do a refresh and restock again shortly.

I also need to replace some camping gear so am looking at some solar capacity for that (solar panel and powerbanks to charge up to go with that), and lighting.

But I am also looking at changing weather patterns, geopolitical rumblings, other health issues as well as continuing covid issues, .....and trying to think ahead a little on how I should be prepping for those risks. As I suspect it's quite a bit different to how I actually am prepping....

Sideorderofchips · 04/05/2021 20:05

I have solar power banks and a large supply of batteries 😂

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/05/2021 20:49

I know this one 😀😀. You need a garden though. You pee in the garden. For solid waste you need to empty the toilet of water. Open a bin bag and line the toilet. Anchor with seat. Do your business and put a scoop of cat litter over ready for next person. Bury bin bag in garden when full enough. The prepping is cat litter, bin bags, shovel to dig bloody great hole. Voila!

In all seriousness though that’s a bloody scary list Sideorderofchips My prepping skills are far too simple.

I'm a bit of a hardcore lol

Also have a bucket line with biodegradable bag and use cat litter. Woodchip one would be best. And yes to a garden

If you were inclined you can get camping toilets to line

Sideorderofchips · 04/05/2021 21:05

Also with regards to radio, I have a wind up am/fm radio which lives in a faraday bag. It also take batteries
