What date do people think food shopping will become a problem with Brexit?
I don't think it will be the 1st Jan as shops do have some stock in warehouses (obviously not a lot of fresh stuff but still some stock) but would people say it will be that first week as soon as the news shows lorry hold ups and then causing panic buyers?

@Stp44

Wow, having four months of food, extra freezers, if people buy what they actually need not what they think they need there will be plenty stock for all. Oh the hardship of not being able to buy lettuce in December. Back in march I saw a woman with enough beef and chicken she could have started building her own livestock. Shop responsibly folks.
Building up spare slowly over months if you can afford it,so you then don't need to make demands on supply chain when people are panicking? Sounds pretty responsible to me.
MarshmallowManiac · 22/12/2020 10:35

Yes we can leave the stuff in the supermarket for the people who do not have the space, or are unable to keep a store of stuff that will be affected. Sounds really responsible and well thought out doesn't it Stp44

@Stp44 at the end of the day you are free to do the same as anyone else. That means you are free to not stocking up for a crisis that has been looming for quite some time now and then moan about those that had the sense to do so.

It also means you were free to stock up over all this time because you were sensible enough to know your government aren't going to be able to help you when the time comes.

If you don't want to do that fine, but remember that others are free to do it all they wish. They are buying the stock, not stealing it.

The panic buying that's supposedly going on now is being fed by the media, personally where I am I haven't seen any panic buying.

@MarshmallowManiac 4 is great, every little helps! It's one of the things I've missed this year.

Beetroots were extremely easy to grow I found if anyone likes them and didn't take too long to get a crop either, I hear radishes are quick growing but none of us like them in our house.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/12/2020 12:34

Preppies are t the problem. Panic buyers and stockpilers are.

As I just mentioned on another thread, many of us are actually returning to the days of our grandmothers, who knew the importance of having a good supply of basic ingredients at home for a multitude of reasons, including bad weather and power cuts. You can claim it's about frivolity "lettuces in December" but actually it's about being responsible, and ensuring that there's something for everyone if there are difficulties. It won't be preppers putting strain on the supply chain. It'll be smug people like you.
Imsayingnothing · 22/12/2020 14:22

I do wonder if @Stp44 asked the lady in march why she had so much meat if she was that offended by it.

It could have been any reason, maybe she cooks for the homeless, maybe she has several people to do shopping for who can't go themselves, maybe she has a huge family, maybe she was buying for her business. There could have been any reason at all this woman had so much shopping.

Another square o the preppers' bingo board....

Whenwillow · 22/12/2020 15:18

Yeah, totally, I've said that a lot in real life, imsaying. I don't think most people went out and cleared the shelves just for the hell of it. I truly believe that shopping patterns changed, causing a bit of supply disruption, and only the odd person bought a bit too much extra. I'm pretty certain that the people who looked like they'd got way too much were shopping for other people as well as themselves.

cachedelete · 22/12/2020 18:53

I picked up turkey today (the last frozen one in our small supermarket) but have barely been in it otherwise as we've had deliveries - the 'extras' one comes tomorrow so anything missing isn't crucial. I'm very glad not to need to go out tomorrow (except for work!).

We grew courgettes and leeks this year with barely any care, and carrots and radishes easily in a old sink - great to see DD picking her own carrots for salads. Next year I will make an effort to sow more regularly for longer supply.

zzizz · 22/12/2020 21:55

I've bought some more Huel today as an extra prepping thing. I started using it as a diet supplement to make sure I was getting extra protein, and really recommend it as an additional source of nutrition (but possibly wouldn't go as far as some people and use it as a full meal or full diet!)

MarshmallowManiac · 23/12/2020 12:35

It certainly does Imsayingnothing they were yum! I love beetroots, are they easy to grow?

Grew carrots this year cachedelete and we got quite a few. Smile Think will have to get my DH to visit the garden centre at some point shielding to get some bits for next year.

Had delicious tea tonight. Unleashed some of the cool box veg and did stir fry, plus boiled sprouts and broccoli. I had cheese on mine and himself had tinned baked beans with the little sausages in.
We're on our brexit rations now. Hunkering down and hoping for the best!
