What date do people think food shopping will become a problem with Brexit?
I don't think it will be the 1st Jan as shops do have some stock in warehouses (obviously not a lot of fresh stuff but still some stock) but would people say it will be that first week as soon as the news shows lorry hold ups and then causing panic buyers?

Wellllll....Westminstenders thread are reporting the French have closed the border to freight for 48 hours so, you know, about now?

Whenwillow · 20/12/2020 19:56

Yes, shit's hitting the fan right about now Sad

Ridcully82 · 20/12/2020 20:38

Just been reading the Westministenders thread (not seen it before),so yes, thinking could be dodgy in next few days. Even with a really well stocked pantry, feels bit nerve inducing, and can't quite believe what next couple of months might be😱🤞

Rudolphian · 20/12/2020 21:29

Yup. Apparently they going to stop freight.
So now!?

Parker231 · 20/12/2020 21:32

France has temporarily closed their borders to the U.K. No further produce and goods arriving into Dover from Calais or returning.

Boris Johnson to chair meeting of gov emergency Cobra ctte tomorrow as Covid travel bans hit freight.

“The pm will chair a COBR meeting tomorrow to discuss the situation regarding international travel, in particular the steady flow of freight into and out of the UK.”

Ninbus · 20/12/2020 21:54

I can’t believe more of mumsnet are not discussing this. I just came on to check preppers board.

EzzieLove · 20/12/2020 22:44

And this is going to be even worse as millions of people can now longer travel or visit relatives for shared Christmas meals. Just in our two family bubble (which has now just been popped, tier 4 here) I bought a huge turkey, but not all the veg etc to go with it and my daughter has everything thing but not the turkey! Families are going to be hitting the supermarket so they can still have all the trimmings on Christmas Day. Really had to fight the temptation to run to the shop today.

Parker231 · 20/12/2020 22:47

People won’t starve but may have different food than they planned on buying this week.

It’s a much bigger and more immediate problem for production line manufacturing where a delay of parts arriving(even half an hour late) brings everything to a halt.

QueenPaws · 20/12/2020 23:15

Thought of this while I was making tea. If you like them, gnocchi have a long date on them (the vacuum sealed type) and you can actually fry them or toss them in oil and oven them and make mini potatoes for a change. Or instead of pasta, make a bake with tomatoes/veg/cheese/whatever you have

DennisTMenace · 21/12/2020 07:06

I went to Google something this morning and the first thing that comes up in the trending searches is "supermarkets panic buying UK". Can't imagine the usual Christmas supermarket crowds will be improved by having half of them panic buying too! I will be staying well away. I did want to do a post-Christmas fresh stuff shop as assumed the issues would be from January, but will be fine with the freezer and longer life stuff. Am assuming that the oddbox delivery next week won't be impacted yet. As long as it's not all surplus sprouts.

Paranoidmarvin · 21/12/2020 07:24

Woke up to the whole food shortages. I was doing my mums Xmas food shopping on weds. My husband is now at Tesco and getting a ton of food. My brexit food is all snug and safe. But I didn’t want to go into that.

DianaOfTheLakes · 21/12/2020 10:37

I was hoping to stick up on fresh stuff between Christmas and NY. I'll just go to my local co-op / shops in my village and hope for the best. We will also be ok on frozen, tinned and dried until end of Feb, if needs must.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/12/2020 10:44

Shopping is on the way. Morrisons are having horrendous issues with filling my order

No courgettes!

I am just going to have to use the pack already I the fridge.

DoubleGloucester · 21/12/2020 10:46

Typically, our normal food shop was due tomorrow so low on fresh stuff this morning. Managed to do a small fresh shop (what we would normally buy) and luckily have brexit stockpile as backup.

Imsayingnothing · 21/12/2020 14:13

@BlackeyedSusan at least you have some courgettes now, I am not joking I have not seen a courgette this whole year where I am, and that's between several supermarkets. Peppers were hard to get too. But managed eventually. If you are seeing problems with courgettes now then I guess I won't be getting any for the foreseeable future!

BlackeyedSusan · 21/12/2020 20:29

Wow. That's not good Imsaying.

I have been grateful for courgettes most of the year. March was tricky but we still got some. Got enough for Christmas dinner, then can manage. I think it helps to know there might be a problem coming rather than get it dumped on you suddenly.

Going to attempt growing them again. I kill courgettes.

Imsayingnothing · 21/12/2020 21:16

Me too @BlackeyedSusan tried growing them and failed miserably! Will try again this year. Thankfully did well with peppers though so froze them and kept the seeds for this year. So at least if there's none I might grow some again.

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/12/2020 21:23

My crystal ball said the 17th January.

MarshmallowManiac · 21/12/2020 22:38

QueenPaws you can make gnocchi quite easily by cooking a pot of potatoes, draining them and when a little cooler tipping them onto the worktop, and cover and knead in flour until it becomes dough like. Cut into little chunks and roll out like worms and cut and chop into gnocchi pieces. Press lightly with a fork, and dry on a table for an hour, then put into boiling water until they go to the top. Usually about 4/5 mins.

MarshmallowManiac · 21/12/2020 22:47

Tried to grow courgettes this year Imsayingnothing, think we got about four. Grin Love pan frying them with tomatoes, garlic & basil. Smile

Whenwillow · 22/12/2020 07:41

South East tier 4 here, and we haven't had any shortage of courgettes round here as far as I'm aware. It does seem to be a regional thing.
I keep getting an ad for parsnip gnocchi - must be this thread 😂

13luckyblackcats · 22/12/2020 08:24

I love growing courgettes, have never achieved the fabled courgette glut as we happily eat them at least twice a day in the summer! I ordered seeds for next year in October, hoping for a drier summer than this year and last.

Stp44 · 22/12/2020 09:04

Wow, having four months of food, extra freezers, if people buy what they actually need not what they think they need there will be plenty stock for all. Oh the hardship of not being able to buy lettuce in December. Back in march I saw a woman with enough beef and chicken she could have started building her own livestock. Shop responsibly folks.

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/12/2020 09:26

UK food manufacturers have been putting by Brexit stock for the last couple of years if they produce long life, or stock piling Ingredients where they can for short life products. Obviously there's not much you can do about lettuce etc.!
Some had to dig into their Brexit stores to meet demand for panic buying in March, but have mainly replaced as sales then dropped a bit as people ate their stashes.
Products that are UK and should have no supply issues (other than a bit of a lag to stores if panic buying is rife).
Fresh and UHT milk
Bread
Eggs
Fresh meat and poultry
Potatoes
Onions
Root VEG.
SUgar from beet
Cheddar and other regional cheese
Canned rice / custard
Beer, cider, spirits
Some pet food
Stuff from EU
Other fruit and veg.
Breaded, coated and marinaded chicken products
Wine
Milk powder (although we do have a lot of UK intervention milk powder) which is used in more manufactured products than you think, ditto whey powder, casein etc.
Some pork products e. g. bacon is produced in UK but the meat is Irish / Dutch/ Danish
Some beef is Irish but processed in Northern Ireland
Canned tomatoes
Lots of frozen veg and fruit is EU
A lot of supermarket own label pet food comes from Poland
Bulk butter for manufacturing - a lot is Irish

Then there are non-EU imports that are currently imported under EU deals.
All sorts of powders and additives for further processed products.
Cooked chicken in ready meals / sandwiches etc. is Thai or Brazilian mainly
Cane sugar including demerara etc.
Tinned fish
Corned beef

Whenwillow · 22/12/2020 09:32

If you rtft, and the preppers board in general, @Stp44, you will see that most people here have shopped consistently over a long period of time when shops were well stocked. The idea is that we can then keep away from shops if shortages or panic buying become an issue.
That seems pretty responsibe to me.
There has been endless discussion on MN as to what constitutes panic buying and irresponsible behaviour, but having freezers that were filled in the summer and a couple of boxes of tins in the loft does not cause shortages.
I'm not sure any of us have a problem with lack of lettuce. That really is not the issue here Smile
