What date do people think food shopping will become a problem with Brexit?
I don't think it will be the 1st Jan as shops do have some stock in warehouses (obviously not a lot of fresh stuff but still some stock) but would people say it will be that first week as soon as the news shows lorry hold ups and then causing panic buyers?

What fresh things can I be storing in my freezing cold conservatory

MarshmallowManiac · 12/12/2020 21:57

Another good cold place is in the boot of your car.

indignatio · 13/12/2020 08:11

According to The Grocer, at the bottom of the article linked to by @supplychainhusband Lidl vouchers should be in the papers for £10 off a £40 shop.

indignatio · 13/12/2020 08:12

If anyone has found any more space

DianaOfTheLakes · 13/12/2020 11:28

Supermarkets told to begin stockpiling ahead of Brexit deadline
mol.im/a/9048077

Expecting to see panic buying after this headline in the daily mail today.

AldiIsla · 13/12/2020 11:38

I'm just back from Tesco.
The usual Sunday morning calm. Shelves full.

I honestly think no one will "panic" as they believe it'll be fine, then if it's not fine it'll be like last time, people all buying just a little bit extra and the system won't cope.

I got more veg for the freezer and cupboard.

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 16:49

I saw someone who said to put tinned potato’s in the air fryer. Trying that for tea today

TicTacTwo · 13/12/2020 17:34

I'm surprised by this but I suspect that their readers who are staunch Brexiteers will refuse to believe this until they go to a supermarket and see bare shelves or they are inconvenienced by traffic queues near ports . It will be the fault of Remainers of course.
Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 17:44

I flip between thinking it will all be fine and we are over exaggerating to oh my god do I have enough food.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/12/2020 17:47

me too, paranoid, me too. oh well, in a couple of weeks I can start eating it and getting some space back.

TicTacTwo · 13/12/2020 17:48

I've thought of a potential positive!

Sales of tinned and jarred food will rise (assuming that the UK has factories with spare capacity to do the tinning and canning)

TicTacTwo · 13/12/2020 17:49

Sales of tin openers will increase.

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 17:49

To me it seems insane that there would be delays and the food wouldn’t be there. But then I remember March and how empty my Tesco was and I think to myself I’m being sensible.

AliceMcK · 13/12/2020 18:40

We've got a few weeks supply, I top up on things we use as we go along. Like most of you its fresh stuff that will be an issue. It's right now I wish I could actually grow anything edible, I've tried so many times but I'm no good at keeping anything alive (except my kids 🤣).

I'm lucky that my DCs think anything fresh and healthy is our way of torturing them so they will happily live off hot dogs and chicken nuggets for a month if need be

My biggest concern has always been medication. I have autoimmune conditions and get sick very easily so end up taking more than most in way of painkillers & cold/flu meds. I've always kept a decent stocked first aid kit but I've already added significantly to it.

I think once the news that there is no deal hits and people start seeing there usual buys becoming unavailable they will start panicking. Prob 1/2 weeks into the new year.

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 18:54

@AliceMcK I’m going to continue to shop normally in January. And keep my stash of it all goes pear shaped.

DianaOfTheLakes · 13/12/2020 18:59

Likewise. January onwards could well mean DD is living off her dream diet of jarred hot dog sausages and frozen chicken Kiev.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/12/2020 19:27

ds will be happy. dd on the other hand will need to eat up the large supply of tinned and dried beans or go onto medication, if that is available.

oh God, I hope I am wrong.

TicTacTwo · 13/12/2020 19:34

Once there's footage of the queues at ports I think that even the biggest Brexit supporters will panic

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 00:01

Oh really indignatio didn't realise that. Have the Lidl plus app and if you spend over £200 per month they give you one. But if you spend less than that they give you little vouchers and money off.

Vivarium · 14/12/2020 08:25

So now I see the lead BBC story is the government telling us not to stockpile food.

a) Luckily I did my stockpiling months ago

b) Telling people ot to stockpile food is like running around shouting DON'T PANIC, DON'T PANIC

c) What kind of government precipitates this shitshow anyway?

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 11:15

It really is Vivarium Grin Grin Oh the jury is out on your last point, I can't believe how unprepared walking around in the dark they seem to be!

SonjaMorgan · 14/12/2020 15:08

I am guessing first payday after Christmas?

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 12:56

I think when they announce ND the shopping will start in earnest.

Whenwillow · 15/12/2020 13:34

I have 3 tin openers now tictac!!
I was listening to The Bunker podcast ( really worth a listen - spin off from Remainiacs which has been remamed Oh God What Now) and yesterday's musing was that ND won't be announced before Christmas because of panic buying fears, and most people - inc journalists will have their eye off the ball to a degree for a couple of days afterwards so dastardly deeds can be done with less scrutiny.
Certainly an interesting take - though it was made clear (humorously) that it's very Very difficult to work out if there'll be a deal or not.
Today Rory Stewart was in conversation on The Bunker and he was very interesting. Things would be very different if he had become PM.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 14:13

Yes I bet they won't, will have to listen to that Whenwillow thanks. Yes definitely he is much more moderate.
