Stocktake Time - Brexit Countdown

Can't believe we might actually have a No Deal crash.

Anyone else finding it overwhelming doing usual Christmas stuff, the winter weather preparations and then Brexit and being ready for more coronavirus stuff?

I need to do a stock take of food and toiletries.

We've been life prepping so boiler has been serviced early, electrics have had an upgrade this year. Car getting serviced next month.

I can't be arsed.
I feel sick.

I'm enjoying this thread!
Thanks marshmallow I will give that a go. Do you use the tins of carrotsandpeas? I haven't got any of those but I need to get dog food later so will have a look.
Appreciate the warnings re gloves and freezer burn (if I haven't got my threads confused)

lexloofah · 15/12/2020 13:46

Some good tips there HelebethH, h/t to Marshmallow for the link. Sheppers pie on the menu for tmrw. We love tuna pasta bake, saving that one for Jan, trying to eat only fresh stuff for now.

Ordered more bread flour last night, I make our own anyway so constantly using it up but thought I would boost stores this side of Christmas plus I felt like I needed to be doing something rather than just waiting

I also took the many, many ice packs out of the freezer left there from the summer so now have a nice cavity to fill in there, probably shuffle some butter and cheese from the fridge in there or should I add to the modest vienetta mountain we have accrued while they are £1 a pop?

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 13:53

Yes tinned carrots & peas together, Lidl's best Whenwillow

Wish I had cavities in my freezer lexloofah can't seem to fit anything else in. Think I will have to sort out my fridgefreezer and see if I can make some more room.

Whenwillow · 15/12/2020 14:53

Thanks marshmallow

Inspired by you lovely lot I've sorted my freezer (cunning plan, whoever suggested cool box, meant I could contain what was in it drawer by drawer)
Some has been put in fridge to defrost and create soup, some has been got out to have for dinner tonight/tomorrow. Some has been binned (looking at you, stinky lamb's liver - not sure if you're off or just smelly) Some has indeed been removed from original packaging and re-wrapped.
Now I have space to do a little bit more batch cooking to freeze properly flat and not just vaguely flattish.
I may even be able to freeze a whole chicken when I'm done Smile
The things that please me!

Whenwillow · 15/12/2020 14:56

I've even found space for the meat I bought this week, instead of my usual cooking that whilst leaving what's in the freezer to get old and freezer burned.
Stock rotation at last!! Am feeling quite proud of myself Smile

@Whenwillow

This is definitely something I aspire to!
MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 16:27

Well done guys, it does feel satisfying to rotate your stock! Aren't we easily pleased. Grin Grin

EzzieLove · 15/12/2020 22:59

Thanks everyone for advice/reminders. larder sorted, everything clearly dated and put in order, oldest at front, shelves cleaned etc... freezer defrosted and re organised (that’s a hell of a job, deep freezer in garage, I nearly fell in!) made room for turkey which I got today. Now having to eat roast beef and venison stew , oh dear, what a shame. (sorry vegetarians). Husband and son banned from touching anything in both areas for foreseeable future. My DS has a habit of helping himself to ice cream and not shutting the freezer door properly. Hence the need to defrost. List made for large shop in next couple of weeks. Think I am finally getting somewhere.

AdoraBell · 15/12/2020 23:16

How long do things last in a freezer?

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 23:39

Usually around 3 months AdoraBell but saying that my food has been in the freezer for far longer than that and it all was fine.

Thanks Ezzie for reminding me, need to write a big list.

AdoraBell · 15/12/2020 23:49

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking Marshmallow but DH has told it’s only 90 days. So I’ve cleared half of a tray, straight into the dustbin.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/12/2020 00:17

Oh no grounds for divorce Adora what did u throw away??? By the way the other day I ate cannelloni 1 year out of date and it was fine. Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 16/12/2020 00:46

If it smells plasticy then it is too old. Need to sort the top drawer of freezer out.

Whenwillow · 16/12/2020 08:01

I use stuff much older than 3 months, but agree about the plasticy smell. If it smells suspect, it goes. I hate waste so it rarely gets to that stage.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/12/2020 11:19

Yes your nose is your friend in these situations.

DoubleGloucester · 16/12/2020 20:03

Aargh I have some veggie chilli in my freezer I made in March... but then it is only veggies and soya so maybe still OK?

AdoraBell · 16/12/2020 20:09

I literally just grabbed some stuff from the bottom of a drawer. CBA to check it, I know it was more than 3 months old. Normally I would only reject anything that appears bad once defrosted.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/12/2020 21:32

I'm sure it will be fine DoubleGloucester but just have a sniff.

Well thinking positive you have more room to put some more lovely (fresher) food in AdoraBell

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 16/12/2020 21:44

Oh gosh, I'm fairly sure many things in my freezer have been there much, much longer than three months Blush

I'm currently planning a big Iceland shop to be delivered next week, not because we desperately need anything, more to keep stock levels high and keep myself on their delivery list for when/ if we do need a home delivery. I've already sorted milk, fruit & veg and loo roll deliveries, this would be a useful addition. Then I'll try to do a Lidl shop between Christmas and New Year for fresh stuff, plus anything which I think may run out quickly after January 1st Confused

MarshmallowManiac · 16/12/2020 21:49

So have mine Clara much much longer
Definitely need to do a big list. Yes heading to Lidl between Christmas and New Year for fresh and stuff which could run out in Jan. Smile

Whenwillow · 17/12/2020 08:00

I think food stays safe for years in the freezer, but I wonder if it's more a case of packaging breaking down and pollutants seeping into it. The liver I binned certainly smelt more plastic than off.
I think if poss we need to just keep fresh produce topped up, as posters on the Westminstenders thread think shortages may well start before Christmas.
Have resolved to leave things in there for less time now. I used some frozen sliced peppers which had bbe Feb 20 in a soup yesterday and they were fine.

Whenwillow · 17/12/2020 08:02

I'm managed to put was meant to be my middle paragraph in at the end.
That's what comes of distracted (supposed to be working) posting.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/12/2020 08:45

Definitely feel like I am in raining for the women's cricket team. My fridge keeps throwing me things to catch every time I open it.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/12/2020 08:46

Training ffs.

Whenwillow · 17/12/2020 08:51

You must be fit Susan with all your stairs too. How many flights do you have to go up to flat?
